This is my first time living in a city that isn't smoke free. I recently moved to Indianapolis. It has actually been quite a difficult adjustment for me. What is the general attitude about this in Indy?
The last legislative movement I found was the 2006 Smoke Free Air Ordinance. I also saw on http://www.smokefreeindy.com that "59% of Hoosier voters support a law prohibiting smoking "in indoor public places, including workplaces, public buildings, offices, casinos, restaurants and bars."
Are there any smoke free bars? Or is that business suicide?
Bloomington is smoke free and greater for it! there is also Radio Radio in Indy.
I wish we were a smoke free city. The thing that I hate worse, but don't run into hardly ever, is trying to eat a meal when there are other people smoking. They talk about their right to smoke and eat, but what about my right to not smell smoke, get second hand smoke lung cancer and pay for food that just ends up tasting like smoke?
As far as bars go, there are a few I just won't go to because of the smoke and the venue not being well ventilated. I don't know if it would really hurt a business, people are still going to go out and drink. It might help, because people like me who hate the smell of smoke and are very susceptible to it's effects (I've waken up with many sore throats from a night spent sitting in a smoky bar), might venture out more often(?).
I agree. I dream of the day when Indy finally becomes smoke free - I feel like this is what is happening in most major cities across the country. Right in our area - Bloomington, Louisville, Chicago, and I believe Dayton are all smoke free. Naptown Roller Girls have all of their after parties at Locals Only (typically a very smokey bar) and we negotiated to make all of our after parties smoke free - it's much more pleasant!
I used to be a smoker, and quit fairly recently. I still would support a smoke free venue. Didn't bother me to go outside and smoke in other cities. Even as a smoker, I had a problem going to bars and clubs because of the large amounts of smoke. The next day I would always have a very hoarse voice. I worked at 6 downtown for a few weeks when they first opened. Due to the terrible ventilation, I ended up completely losing my voice for about 4 days. By completely I mean, I had no sound at all coming out. I completely support Indy going smoke free, I hate going out to bars and clubs because of the smokiness. Also, I hate people's carelessness, and have had several articles of clothing ruined due to people's drunken cigarette wailing.
Radio Radio is the vanguard smoke-free bar.
This is a great discussion! Working to educate Indianapolis residents about why we should be smoke free is exactly what our coalition is doing. I see that you have been to our website already which is a good first step in learning about going smoke free. You can continue to connect with us through our website and through our facebook and myspace pages to link into activities and events that we have going on about being smoke free. We are looking for people that support the cause so please consider linking with us. Thanks.
I don't get it. Smoking is already verboten in most restaurants I go to. The Music Mill and Radio Radio are smoke free. The last time I went to the Vogue, smoking wasn't allowed, at least for that night. So, do the body Nazis want every little thing arranged according to their whims, or can the rest of us still have a tiny little portion of the world wherein we live the way we want?
