I volunteer at Global Gifts. The store is run by almost all volunteers. We do things such as set up displays, run sales floor, unpack products, fix shelves, clean, etc. The money saved goes partially to the buyer (the prices for the items you get there a v. good), but mainly goes back to the artisans. The people from over 35 different countries make a living wage. They are paid enough to live and eat, and also grow their business (i.e. fair trade).
It's also hard to run on volunteers because some people don't find it as important as other things (jobs, vacations, etc). People will sometimes cancel without calling. Not that everyone does, but it does happen.
I was just thinking about volunteering tonight, and how important I think it is. What does it mean to you, if anything? Do you volunteer, and if so where? It would be nice to know if there are other opportunities out there to get involved in.
Thanks for any input.
I've seriously been considering working as a volunteer at the Humane Society of Indianapolis. My dog got killed 2/7 and I've REALLY been missing him. I figure that it might be a way to at least have a dog or two in my life until it's time to find a replacement for him. It will be a while, he was a great buddy.
My big thing is blood donation. It takes really little time but is SO important. My little brother would be dead if not for blood transfusions and my grandfather would have died much sooner then he did.
I used to volunteer a lot more in college, but then just sort of got "too busy". I've actually been looking into getting back into it. I'm thinking about the Damien Center or American Cancer Society.
I do like to participate in different events, such as walk/runs and beer or wine tastings for charity (doesn't really count, I know...)
as always, the offer of free dj services for a credible organization is always on the table
