What is your current can't live without candy indulgence?
I'm not a big sweet eater. I generally stay away from all conventional candies as I avoid processed sugars, and artifical sugars in my diet. However, a recent trip to the Carmel Meijer prompted a purchase of my favorite gummy snack, gummy dinosaurs. These are the best gummies I've ever found. When they are fresh they are unbelievable delicious. The ones I bought last night were the best I've bought in awhile, they were unbelievably fresh, and 2 lbs for 3 dollars. Yummy.. I'm munching on some right now.
Since these little dinosaurs were bringing me unbelievable joy, I just wondered what everyone elses favorite sugary snack was.. and why?
Sour Patch Kids. They hurt to eat, mmmm. I 'm also partial to the mexican strawberry candies coated in pepper dust, you've got to know where to get those though.
If anyone has any Japanese candy recommendations I'd enjoy hearing them. (The tasty koala cookies and Pocky don't count)
For some reason, I always like Whoopers when I was a kid. For years, I called those malted milk balls Whoppers though. I can't stand 'em now. Like everything else, they've probably taken out all of the things that make them taste good in favor of being healthy.
i used to be a huge sweet junkie, but now I try not to eat anything with corn syrup, which is incredibly difficult to do.. and the thought of 2lbs of gummy dinosaurs makes me want to throw up. not in a bad way.. just 2lbs of anything sounds gross to me.
so here is my most recent favorite candy discovery: Nerds Jelly Beans.
They are freaking delicious! The bag describes them as bumpy and lumpy which sounds gross but is really quite good!
I really like Sunspire chocolates (they can be found at Whole Foods). They are somewhat similar to M&Ms, but they're all natural. And while they're not certified fair trade, they're close to it and a whole lot better than anything manufactured by Mars in terms of ethical production.
I LOVE gummy candies. Bears, peach rings (mmm), worms, basically anything gummy. And they do make tasty organic, non corn syrup versions for slightly more money. And I like chewy sweetarts, though I'm sure those have corn syrup too(?) (I'm with you Allison, trying to stay away from goverment pushed corn syrup {have you read Micheal Pollen?}). Mmm, gummi. I think it's just the satisfaction of chewy and slightly sticky.
I'm not real big on candy either, but if you set a bag of Sour Skittles in front of me, I'll eat them until the lining of my mouth is gone...or the bag is empty. Whichever comes first.

I'm trying to buy only fair trade chocolate now (whole foods and trader joes are both good places to look). Dark chocolate is really my downfall! And the giant bucket of hershey's mini candy bars that sits directly behind me in our office (obviously not fair trade nor free of corn syrup... yet still a downfall...)
I need to get me some veggie gummies, because I LOVE gummies but try not to eat gelatin (being a vegitarian). Its been awhile.

Where can we find those mexican strawberry candies here in Indy? I'd love to try them sometime, sounds like an interesting combination!

Well I share the 2 lbs with my boyfriend, and don't eat them in one sitting.. so 2lbs isn't that bad when consumed that way. Nerds Jelly Beans sound interesting, I always liked the originals. I stay away from corn syrup as well, except for my occasional gummy treat, which I'm avoiding from this purchase on out, because of the gelatin.

Thanks for the tip! I've been wondering about the Whole Foods chocolates, I hope they use rice syrup, that would be awesome!
That makes me feel so much better.. concerned about binged candy eating and all!
I know the corn syrup thing is hard.. give the jelly beans a try they are worth it!

Yay! Non corn syrup, organic gummies! Where do you purchase them besides Whole Foods?? Also, do you know if they have gelatin?

if you find a good place for gelatin free gummies, please share, I'm in the process of switching to vegan basically, because I don't like milk and cheese either, and want to stay away from gelatin. I've seen the gummies, at whole foods, but haven't investigated to see if they are gelatin free yet.
I have tasted some of the non corn syrup gummies at Trader Joe's but they were not as tasty to me as the full corn syrup kind...
Well, I usually just get mine from Whole Foods. There's the one in Carmel and the one in Nora (the Wild Oats just officially turned into a Whole Foods). I haven't found them anywhere else (that I can remember). And I believe that they have gelatin in them, but I could be wrong. I'll let you know the next time I buy some.

Perhaps Jalisco's? And which strawberry candy are you referring to Jammy, is it Pica Fresca?
Cool, if I go there before I see it on here, I'll report back on the status of gelatin as well? Also, I think gummies have to be fresh, if they aren't nice and fresh, they arent nearly as good. I'm willing to sacrifice a little bit of taste for lack of corn syrup, I'll have to get my rear over there again for a taste test.

It was similar, but not gummy. I bet those are pretty darn close. Mmm. It might have been hand made, it comes in plain cellophane bags with a red cardboard top.
I used to buy it at El Norteno in Bloomington.

I've submitted the place as a venue here for review. They have a small grocery in the restaurant. That wiki is whack. Me and a foodie buddy agree it's some of the best if not the best Mexican food we've had north of Texas. It's not a taqueria style place, but the food is close to what you get in a sit down place in Mexico.
The chile rellenos look like giant fried rats, the tamales are hand made everyday, and the mole is wonderful. They have every flavor of Jarritos and make lemonade in the store.
I'm all drooly now.
If I ever get down to Bloomington I'll definitely have to make a stop there! I went to Whole Foods last weekend, and scoured the ingredients for their gummies. Didn't see gelatin listed, but they were 8.99 a lb. I think I'll stick to my apple slices and peanut butter, or grapefruit and honey for sweet snacks for the moment being. Organic sweets will have to be a rare treat!
