I met a friend at Johnny Rockets for a quick bite to eat. I'd never been there before so I didn't know how important the drinking straws are there, the server ceremoniously forcing us to accept a straw with a flourish, displaying the straws from the jar like a floral display. And then he dropped a couple of nickels on the table for the jukebox, which was mainly filled with novelty hits of the 50s and 60s like the "Lollipop" song but with a couple of really incongruous selections like "Tequila Sunrise" by the Eagles. The food was unremarkable which is why I refrain from further comment. Next up: a movie at the Keystone Arts Cinema---but that was sold out and we didn't really want to see any of the other selections. So, a walk through the mall became the evening's entertainment. Some of those trendy clothing shops must have tanning beds in their breakrooms, judging by the uniform fleshtones of the shopgirls. And those security guards on the Segways are always good for a furtive laugh or two. Tall skinny leggy models paraded couture in a low budget fashion show at Saks. The clothing hung loose but security was tight. There are some really cool books at Anthroplogie and products are displayed progressively. I looked at every one of the entries in a book called "1001 Fun Things to Do in New York City" and not one of those things was "Stand Outside of the Today Show Studios and Wave at the Cameras". Leaving the mall, we passed the food court and spotted the fashion models, feasting on croutons. A security guard scootered past us and bounced down the escalator and ended up in the elevator with some moms and their strollers.
So, I take it the two songs you listed, the "Lollipop" song and "Tequila Sunrise" were the two you played on the jukebox. Was the first song "My Boy Lollipop," which featured a prefamous Rod Stewart on harmonica? I can think of worse ways to spend two nickels.
Do you remember Melanie Safka's "The Nickel Song"?
ummm ok?
