Bill German, 46, started a "fanzine" about the Rolling Stones when he was a teenager. He spoke with USA TODAY about his book Under Their Thumb: How a Nice Boy From Brooklyn Got Mixed Up With the Rolling Stones (And Lived to Tell About It).

1. You followed the Stones and published your fanzine for 17 years. Are you surprised you lasted that long? No. I think one of the keys was that I maintained my identity throughout. I saw people who wanted to keep up with them. They got carried off in handcuffs or caskets.

2. You say you learned too much in this insider role. Do you have regrets about that? Only in the sense that it began to take the fun out of it. Once you learn how the magicians do their tricks, it takes the enjoyment away.

3. Who is your favorite Stone? Hmmmm. It's hard to choose. I guess I would say Keith (Richards). As a person, Keith was so generous.

4. What's the most bizarre thing you saw in your years with the Stones — that you can mention here?(Laughs.) I think I reached a level where nothing shocked me. I saw some of the drugs. I didn't witness any crazy orgies.

5. Have the Stones read your book? I did not seek their approval. If you give them a chance to say no, they will.
