CNN deputy political director Alex Wellen's debut novel, Lovesick (Three Rivers Press, 301 pp., $13.95), is about getting married — from an eager groom's point of view. Wellen, 39, spoke with USA TODAY.

1. I thought the groom's job was just showing up. No? When you get into the throes of putting a wedding together, you have stronger opinions about things you never thought you cared about.

2. You say most men want to get married? I was getting tired of watching movies or reading books where men delayed marriage or went kicking and screaming into it. I came across many men, including myself, who absolutely want to get married.

3. Any advice for dealing with a potential hard-headed father-in-law, like the one in your novel? There's a lot of good reason to ask permission (to marry his daughter), to have the conversation with him. To have that kind of ally to start the relationship. It's not so much asking permission, but getting the guy on your team.

4. Did you have any say in the wedding plans when you married your wife, Kris? In general, she wanted my involvement. There are areas the men should stay out of.

5. Would you advise getting married illegally at a museum, like the couple in your novel did? I'm not sure I'd encourage felonies or misdemeanors, but it might relieve other pressures you're feeling.
