This Tuesday night, Jens Lekman will be playing what i hope to be a wonderful set at Jakes in Bloomington. Alongside will be local Totally Michael. Anyone who can make it out should, Jens Lekman hails from Sweden and is on Bloomington based label Secretly Canadian. Totally Michael is fun catchy music and is known to have once dressed as a bee.
Post your thoughts on the show when you get back! I haven't seen this guy for a couple years.
Anybody who does a song cycle about the dude from the movie "Mask" qualifies as awesome in my book.
The new Jens is terrific. Maybe better than the last one. Unfortunately I think I'm too tired to try and attend tonight. A little live-showed out.
Fans and Jens-curious, read this: http://www.slate.com/id/2176205/nav/ais/
It includes lots of lyrical excerpts, including this from "Maple Leaves":
So we talked for hours and you cried into my sheets you said you hated your body that it was just a piece of meat ... I disagreed I think you're beautiful but it's impossible to make you understand that if you don't take my hand I lose my mind completely … Madness will finally defeat me She said it was all make-believe but I thought you said maple leaves and when she talked about a fall I thought she talked about a season I never understood at all I thought she said maple leaves and when she talked about the fall I thought she talked about Mark E Smith I never understood at allJens was great last night. He had about 7 people on stage with him, all wearing nurse uniforms. During one of the new songs they did a little coordinated dance number and were really please with themselves that they pulled it off. It's good to see a band really have fun on stage. Much of the material they played was from the new record, but they also played some older songs, including Maple Leaves (thanks for the lyrics, Matt) and Black Cab. For the last encore Jens came out solo and played Shirin.
Did he play "Sky Phenomenon?"
I'm a sucker for the slow ones.
I don't think he played "Sky Phenomenon". I was dying to hear "Cold Swedish Winter". Nothin!
