This post isn't about Indy...but it's about an Indy-girl moving to Memphis! Can anyone tell me more about the city? I've only been once and will be moving in a few months...
Even for Indy folks, I think Memphis would be a great place to visit, so bring on the suggestions.
Anyone that has information about the art scene, restaurants, neighborhoods, etc. let me know!
Good luck, I don't know anything about Memphis at least you know the weather is going to be better. The one thing I do know is you will have a worse NBA team than you do here.
I am from Memphis, having moved here 10 months ago. The winters are milder, but 1" of snow will cripple the city because they have no effective snow plan since it only snows about twice a winter. You will miss the culture of Indianapolis. You will miss the civilization of Indianapolis. But will will get some darn fine Bar-Be-Que!
Memphis is awesome! Hope you're a music fan. Such incredible music tradition regardless of personal preferences. You'll basically get to see where Cash and Elvis started. I don't do Graceland but if you're a true music lover you can see where Jeff Buckley spent the final year of his life. Plus that duck walk thing at the Peabody Hotel is pretty trippy. Every single day they have ducks walking through the lobby. I didn't know that was the case and I thought I was having an acid flashback. Good times though. Jealous!
Memphis was a great place to live and work for the 18 years I was there. There are lots of fun, welcoming people. Demographically it's more diverse than Indy, but not as international. The local political scene is so crazy, it has to be seen to be believed. Most living expenses were a little cheaper in Memphis, and housing considerably cheaper. Memphis' Downtown revived during my years there, and there are now more entertainment options, especially pop music. I agree with raymid that you may miss some of Indy's culture, because there are more options here. There are more theatres and galleries in Central Indiana. The symphony in Indy is better than the Memphis Symphony, which is about to lose its good music director. In Midtown Memphis, Overton Park contains a good little art museum and college of art, and the Overton Square area has a small, but progressive theater district, and a new theater in the works. If you like Italian food, try the restaurants owned by the Grisanti family.
Try Yelp.com it really helped me when i moved to SF. Good Luck!!
