Those are some classics! Not sure about "Living Single" being number 2 on the list. I'm sure there are 100 different opinions on this, but I would have to throw "Saved By the Bell" on the list for all of the late 80's/ early 90's kids out there. I could also probably sing any song from ABC's TGIF line up back in the day too.

you know what??? Living Single was Definitely number 9. I had 10 at the top and 1 at the bottom... there must be a Glitch in the indy.com matrix that automatically switches the numbering around for lists... that SUCKS. Now I gotta EDIT... BRB

Try these:

Mr. Ed
Growing Pains
Baywatch
My Three Sons
Muppet Babies
The Addams Family
The Flintstones
Scooby-Doo

And a hint on numbering: Use the "closed" parenthesis- for example: 1)

And I love how in that Diff'rent Strokes photo Mr. Drummond has his eyes closed.

Ahhhh - the abc TGIF lineup) originally included "perfect Strangers" "Just the Ten of Us" "Full House" and "Mr. Belvedere. I swear somewhere in there was The Brady Bunch (the series) when they were all adults - remember? And Bobby was a Nascar driving who was paralyzed in a terrible accident. Those were the days...

One of my favorite cyber-slacking activities is watching these sitcom intros on YouTube! My favorites include Perfect Strangers, Three's Company, Bosom Buddies (I know its just Billy Joel but I love when Tom Hanks catches the fruit!), and Today's Special (from old 80s Nickelodeon!).

OH MY GOD... How on EARTH did I forget "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Aire"??? "In west Philadelphia, born and raised... on the playground is where I spent most of my days..." :)

caralyn: UM... are you serious about the adult Brady show? I musta been grounded that ENTIREseason :)

joe.shearer: ooh... Muppet babies... Now cartoons, are a whole different list :) Do you remember Hammer-Man the cartoon?? lol What about the WWF cartoon? and Pro-Players with Michael Jordan, Wayne Gretsky and Bo Jackson??

chewbeckah: I thought that I was the only one who remembered Today's Special... I heard Joni went on to do more... um... adult entertainment. Muffy was like the first REAL hip-hop artist :)

I believe that you should be able to sing most of the words, or at least hum it, to make it a good theme song.

My tops (in no particular order):

GILLIGAN'S ISLAND (how is this being left out?!!)

Brady Bunch

Fresh Prince of Bel Air

Family Ties (what would we do baby . . .)

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (turtles in a half-shell, turtle power!)

GILLIGAN'S ISLAND! yeah, that's what's up :) Okay, I see your Family Ties and raise you a Growing Pains.

My favorite trivia about the theme to "Gilligan's Island":

Substitute the lyrics with that of "Amazing Grace." Amazing, huh?

(And for those who are poetically inclined, hum "Gilligan" to the words of the Emily Dickinson poem "Because I Could Not Stop For Death.")

JL Kato on Feb 13, '08 at 10:36 AM

Scooby Doo and Addams Family too. Definitely.

I'm searching my brain for Growing Pains, and I got nothing. And I watched that show a lot. (Boner. Ha!)

Charles in Charge. Yeah, I remember that one.

What about that duh-nuh-nuh-nuh of the old "Knight Rider." Not really a theme song, but that one was distinctive.

Cheers was a great one!

kimikokopuffs: Technically Andy Griffith had no words either. Knight Rider theme was tight... so tight that it was sampled like 3 or 4 times for hip-hop songs in the late 90's or early 2000's... I remember one was Timbaland, and another was Busta Rhymes...

So tight that it also gets played during stage changes at the Red Garder too, so I've been told anyway??

I wish I wasn't so busy at work today, this would be the best time killer yet!

All in the Family's theme "Those Were the Days"

"Welcome Back Kotter"

"Shaft"

"The Beverly Hillbillies" is right up there with the Gilligan's Island theme -- goofy and great to sing kids to sleep.

And I never even saw the TV show "Peter Gunn," but the theme song is certainly cool (even without words).

I don't think being in one episode qualifies "In the Air Tonight" as a theme song.

I pity the fool that doesn't list "The A-Team"!!

"In 1972 a crack commando unit was sent to prison by a military court for a crime they didn't commit. These men promptly escaped from a maximum security stockade to the Los Angeles underground. Today still wanted by the government, they survive as soldiers of fortune. If you have a problem. If no one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire, The A Team."

I love it when a plan comes together.

Jan Hammer brotha but the Phil Collins song is amazing! I think, hands down, Miami Vice had the best music of all-time when it comes to an entire series run. Great stuff.

Was it the actual theme song for it? If it was then I'm wrong but I would assume he meant the theme song for every other episode.

My votes go to pretty much what everyone else is saying:

1.) Miami Vice (Jan Hammer version ;-))

2.) Charles in Charge

3.) Baywatch

4.) Three's Company

And some new additions:

1.) The Wonder Years, I think I'll have just about everyone agree with me.

2.) Friday Night Lights

3.) Nip/Tuck

and I never watched the show but I think the theme song to Blossom is hilarious.

Great topic by the way.

Hulk Hogan's Rock 'n Wrestling...absolutely. Hammer-Man I never actually watched, and I skipped the Jordan/Bo/Gretzky one too.

I thought about leaving out cartoons, but I couldn't bear to leave out The Flintstones, so I thought Muppet Babies would be appropriate too, because the theme song was just kickin' on that show.

I also was thinking that the song should be specific to this show-no adapting existing songs for this i.e. The Sopranos or The Wonder Years, and that would also disqualify "In the Air Tonight," though like others have said it wasn't really the theme song for the show.

I was also leaning more toward themes with lyrics as opposed to just music. Otherwise, "The Incredible Hulk" has to be on there for its closing credits music.

And Penfold...identical cousins are awesome.

Some great ones have been mentioned.

How about

Sesame Street

The Muppet Show

The Gong Show (Everytime I hear it I always think of "Gene Gene The Dancing Machine")<---- Showing my age

Freaks & Geeks

Dick Van Dyke

S.W.A.T.

Do cartoons count? If so how about

The Flinstones

Hong Kong Phooey

Super Chicken

Tom Slick

George Of The Jungle

Underdog

Though I absolutely HATED the show, MASH had a very catchy theme song... another good one without lyrics was Matlock's song.

And my wife had a good one last night that I can't believe I left off of the list and I don't think anyone has mentioned: THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES

I like going where everybody knows your name..."Cheers"

I'm old....does anyone remember "The Courtship of Eddies Father" (I think thats the name)...it goes like "people let me tell you bout my best friend"..is that it...the 70's are a little fuzzy...

"Welcome Back" from "Welcome Back Kotter"...back then all the songs became hits on the radio

Friends theme song did too in more modern times.."I'll Be There for You"

How could I forget Cheers?

How about "WKRP in Cincinnati"? And the theme from "The Greatest American Hero" HAS to be in there too ("Believe it or Not").

I think I would have to say Sanford and Son. But I feel a bit torn because Good Times would have to be my favorite. In plus the Cosby Show would have to be up there even though they practically changed it every season. But there has to be something said for a show that had major bearing on me becoming a jazz fan at such a young age!

I liked Hill Street Blues theme song quite a bit. For cartoons, Hong Kong Phooey is the greatest.

How about the theme song for "Fraggle Rock".. that one was a classic.. also "Salute Your Shorts" on Nickelodeon (Camp Annawanna, we hold you in our hearts. And when we think about you, it makes me wanna fart!).. also, this may be kinda generic, but the theme song from the show "The Heights". The theme song became an instant number one and was a one hit wonder for Jamie Walters (yes I googled it). Interesting fact: that song hit number one on the Billboard Charts the same day that show was canceled haha
