I'm sad to see that Roy Scheider passed away. He was in some great films, most famously in my favorite movie, "Jaws."
My favorite Roy Scheider moment: in "Jaws," a beleaguered Chief Brody comes home and sits at the dinner table with his younger son. Brody has his hands on his face, and looks at his son, who is imitating his father. Brody moves his hands, and his son mimics him as Brody's wife watches. Finally, the game ends as Brody makes a monster face at his son and makes him laugh.
Finally, Brody leans over and says "give us a kiss."
The boy says "why?"
"Because we need it," Brody answers.
Great scene, great character moment, and the perfect illustration of the kind of father I want to be. A perfect example of how movies has affected in a positive way this guy's life above and beyond allowing me to "shut off my brain" for 2 hours.
He's gonna need a bigger boat.
s.h.
You know, Scheider improvised that "bigger boat" line. How sweet is that? The definitive moment of the definitive summer blockbuster, and it wasn't scripted. Incidentally, Scheider was also good in "2010" and "Marathon Man."
found your post because I did a search about the "father/son" moment and I agree with you completely. I think to alot of us of a certain age Scheider as Brody has connected with us as someone we really knew like a family member and that special moment from the film really drives that home. You just dont see that kind of character development in movies anymore.
