Unusual brunch on the menu -- any way you slice it
Brunch pizza became an intriguing notion after I called Jockamo Upper Crust Pizza, 5646 E. Washington St., to find out how sausage gravy ended up on pizza crust.
"It's a lot like an omelet on bread," manager Marshall Davis said. Jockamo builds them with gravy where the tomato sauce traditionally would be, and sprinkles scrambled eggs over the top. The pies go in various directions from there, depending on which of the three brunch options you go for. The huevos rancheros version has salsa, cheddar, chorizo, tomatoes and banana peppers, but Davis says it's getting beat out in popularity by the Denver (think Denver omelet, of course) and the Farmhouse -- grilled chicken, cheddar and bacon. Try them any Saturday or Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Cold-weather deals
Through February, a buck buys dinner for kids younger than 12 at RAM Restaurant and Brewery (Downtown at 140 S. Illinois St. and in Fishers at 12750 Parkside Drive). If you'd care to make a math lesson of the bargain, $1 equals 20.04 percent of the meal's regular price, $4.99; if you just want quiet, that's cool, too. Sip your Total Disorder Porter (not $1) while the youngsters have their three-course meal -- carrots and ranch dip to start, entree of mini corn dogs or cheese quesadillas, maybe, and dessert of apple wedges with caramel, ice cream or fruit cup.
King David Dogs, 15 N. Pennsylvania St., also is warming February with a hot deal: Come in on Mondays, order a dog, and get free fries or tater tots. The offer is good till the last Monday of winter -- March 17.
Lovely night out
My feelings toward this restaurant's hummingbird cake are loving indeed, but for Valentine's Day, Patrick's Kitchen and Drinks, 47 Boone Village Center, Zionsville, finishes its "sweetheart dinner" with a homemade red velvet cake or bananas Foster. 14 West, 14 W. Maryland St., offers chateaubriand for two and music from the Four Sexes. Pick up the phone right now (or at least before 3 p.m. Saturday) and you can get a filet mignon dinner for two from Oakleys Bistro, 1464 W. 86th St.

Free tater tots at King David Dogs ... what an incredible way to start a work week. And I'm going to have to sample those brunch pizzas ("brunch" and "pizza" are two of my favorite words).
Hmm, I'm happy eating cold Pizza King for breakfast (it's actually my favorite breakfast), but a breakfast topping pizza is an intriguing idea. Well, it's actually an old idea, since you've been able to buy them in the frozen section of the grocery store for years, but I like the idea of getting a fresh-baked breakfast pizza.
