As real estate agents always say, location is everything. And Canal Bistro Mediterranean Grille, 6349 N. Guilford Ave., certainly has a great location. Situated on the canal right in the middle of Broad Ripple, this bistro offers tasty Middle Eastern fare in an appealing setting. Surrounded by tiki torches, its outdoor dining area was a great place to spend one of our recent unseasonably warm fall evenings.
Space inside seemed a bit tight, but the restaurant has a comfortable, relaxed, family-friendly feel, despite the constant bustle of waiters. Ours was young and inexperienced (though conscientious), but an obviously seasoned server (who looked a bit like James Garner in The Rockford Files) seemed so adept that I had to remark, Now there's a waiter.
Though there was an initial lag in service, an observant manager noticed and brought a basket of warm pita bread, which was happily refilled later. That jump-started things, and the service proved pretty good overall. Our waiter's wine recommendation worked out well too, and that helped.
The menu had a variety of Middle Eastern favorites. We loved the hummus appetizer; the gyro and the shawarma were good too (though a bit sloppy to eat). Both arrived load with meat - generous servings that unfortunately didn't leave room for dessert (I heard diners at a nearby table rave about the baklava). I did finish my fries, though, and liked the addition of feta cheese sprinkled on top.
Dinner for two with appetizer and drinks - under $50.
