My girlfriend and I are looking to purchase some local art for our house. We are both new to this, and don't have a huge budget. Any suggestions on the best place to start?

I was going to suggest Etsy as well.

Some local restaurants hang local art as well... Try the restaurant (can't think of the name) at 9th and Penn it is next to the Pennsylvania (VanRooy apartments) and across from the new library. It has been at least a year since I have been there, but they had really great art. You can also try Woody's Library Restaurant in Carmel, the owner hang local artist and feature an awesome sculptor!

You should attend the next First Fridays gallery tour (http://www.idada.org/). Almost every gallery has local art for sale. As for budget, you might be hard pressed to find original, one-of-a-kinds at reasonable prices. My jaw has dropped to the floor many times on prices that artists charge for what, cost wise, amounts to paint and canvas (plus blood, sweat, tears, and talent of course). So most people end up buying the much cheaper prints, which leads to the need for the term "starving artist".

First Friday is a great place to start. If you didn't make it in February, mark your calendar for March 7! Also, the arts council has a wonderful beginners guide on buying art posted at indyarts.org (under Artist FAQ).

IDADA.org and indyarts.org both have visual databases of local artists, so you can start your journey at home.

Even on a budget, quality art is available here. Thank you for supporting local artists!

You can also check the artists database at www.indyarts.org. It is a great resource for both artist and buyer alike.

Local Indy artist creates eco-friendly art out of pop tabs. Check out www.cherylsartbox.com for some really cool pieces. Plus, a portion of the proceeds goes to help the Ronald McDonald House of Indiana.

I think the restaurant you're looking for is Urban Element. Very cool place indeed.

The best creative explosion/bang for your buck would have to be the Herron School of Art student ceramic and print sale. They have one every spring around the end of May. My most prized art possesions, besides my own, have come from this event. The art is relatively cheap, its local, and its totally art-rageous!

Check out the Basile Studio Shop at the Indianapolis Art Center -- local art, art created in the IAC studios, all price ranges. Become a member and get a discount!
