Back in the stone ages, people thought that the NFL's plan to make its games on PPV via DirecTV would be a bomb. Nobody would pay hundreds of bucks for games when some of the games are on the telly for free, they thought. Every year, DirecTV reports a positive number of new subs thanks to that very package: The NFL Sunday Ticket.
So, it will inevitable that the NFL, MLB, NBA, and even collegiate sports' grand events on PPV. Years ago, some cable companies experimented with having the NHL on PPV and it worked (United Artists Cablevision was one example) and it was successful.
The NFL has noticed that people spend lots of money on merchandise before, during, and after the Super Bowl, so their next question would be this one:
"Would people pay fifty bucks a pop to watch the Super Bowl on PPV?"
The answer to that question in ten years would be yes, IMHO.
The superbowl is different because it's telecast in so many different countries.
