Basic Story: Drawing comparisons to Feist, Joni Mitchell and Elyse Weinberg, Ontario, Canada's Basia Bulat releases her debut album with a U.S.-only bonus track.
Sample: "I know I tried, but it's hard sometimes/ the roots don't take, it takes a while/ and you pull at the strings but they're broken/ it seems the dance isn't over for me."
Verdict: It's no surprise that the trendy folks over at Volkswagen have used one of Basia Bulat's songs, "Little Waltz," for a commercial. Like Nike Drake's "Pink Moon," (also used in a VW ad) there is an air of mystery to it that begs for advertisement usage. That doesn't make it a bad song by any means (it's actually the highlight of the record). But too much of the album feels as if it's meant for something else, like the single, "In the Night," which sounds like the soundtrack to a pillow fight scene in a really bad chick flick.
