I'm a romantic. I love flowers. And almost every girl loves it when the delivery guy shows up at work and all your coworkers gather around gawking and envying the recipient.

But . . . is it the same for guys?

I really want to do something special for my guy for Valentine's Day. I'm considering the traditional red roses route, or maybe something a little more lighthearted and fun, like tulips or daisies; or even something more masculine, like a bamboo or something. Of course, there's always food, balloons and stuffed animal gifts as well. Candy and stuff I think is out, though, because he's a personal trainer and coach, so I just dont' think it's the best choice.

I just don't know. Do guys secretly feel the same way about flowers that girls do? Are you stoked to get them?

The surprise element, I know, he'll like no matter what. It always brightens your day to know that someone took the time and effort to send you something. But what that something is, I just don't know.

I could use your help guys. Some input, please?

If you want to surprise us with something, get us something you KNOW we like. Dudes like surprises as much as women do, but flowers? Forget that.

Have a deliveryman show up with a flatscreen TV or a new Blu-ray player, then we'll talk.

Yeah, flowers for a guy is not the way to go. Unless your man is a botanist, there is probably no substitute as far as plants go.

A gift, IMO, is the way to go.

I'd like flowers... but like joe says, they might only work for a feller that is really into gardening. I'd prefer something maybe more along the lines of stereotypical guy stuff--- a six pack of my favorite beer, maybe some sort of food to go with it (oh, $80'lb iberico ham or something - lol)... and of course "inappropriate" gifts would be fine }:)

Well, if I knew of a company that delivered gifts like that, I wouldnt' have a problem. Heck, delivering any sort of non-flower, non-food gifts seems to be a challenge, period.

But I appreciate the input. I'll see what else I can find.

Thanks, guys!

My wife sent me an all-woman barbershop quartet to my work once. That was freakin' embarrassing.

How about a personal delivery, over, say, a lunch hour?

Or Amazon.com?

Yeah, he lives in California, so that's not possible. :)

But good idea. That'd be my preference. Online searching for "sexy gift baskets for him." The results are iffy at best. Haha.

I would give her an extra good root if she sent me a real classy arrangement! Sans roses...to cliche.

I've sent my husband flowers before. I believe it was a cheery bouquet of daffodils. And he at least claimed to like them! I mean, come on, who wouldn't like daffodils?

Although as a food writer I do feel compelled to point out that there are edible "bouquets" of fruit that at least look appealing.

But if you really want to send some foodie love, send something from Zingerman's catalog. Based in Ann Arbor, it's a deli and then some. Their catalog rocks. Fabulous food. Deli stuff, bacon, pasta, olive oils, cheeses, chocolate cherry bread (that I can personally vouch for), a Rockin' Reuben sandwich kit. It's all good. www.zingermans.com

I'm not buying you flowers, RJ.

I love you, but not like that. ;)

OMG. Hahahahaha.

Thanks for the thought, Joe. There's no way in a million years he'd wear those, but it's giving me some ideas for other gifts down the road.

So, really guys, no flowers at all? No bonsai bush or bamboo plant? No balloons? What if I sent a sexy gift to his house and a silly "I want to embarrass you at work, but in a sweet way" gift as well?

I like having flowers around the house, too. They look nice and have a pleasant aroma. Usually, I buy the flowers and bring them home to my wife, but we all enjoy them. Even the cats... but that is a different issue. (i.e. need to have a large vase with a sturdy base to avoid feline curiosity induced spills!)

We prefer a variety of flowers. Roses are expensive and seem less "friendly" than just a garden bouquet of fresh cut flowers, which I pick up on the way home from Kroger or Wal-Mart. Don't like the dyed flowers.... fake real flowers, just seems wrong.

Bottomline: flowers are cool for men, too!
