NEW YORK (AP) -- Sylvester Stallone says he used human growth hormone to get buff for the new "Rambo" movie, and defends its use.
"HGH (human growth hormone) is nothing," the 61-year-old actor tells Time magazine in its Feb. 4 issue. "Anyone who calls it a steroid is grossly misinformed."
Because it is nearly indetectable, HGH has become a substance of great concern in major league baseball and other sports battling allegations of rampant doping.
"Testosterone to me is so important for a sense of well-being when you get older," he says. "Everyone over 40 years old would be wise to investigate it because it increases the quality of your life. Mark my words. In 10 years it will be over the counter."
Stallone directed and co-wrote the new "Rambo" sequel, which arrived in theaters Wednesday.

Finally, someone has injected a little perspective into this conversation. If people really want to get serious about dangerous substance abuse, take a look at alchol.
I was a test patient for synthetic HGH as an adolescent because of a pituitary gland deficiency. Patients before me often died in their early 20's--previous treatments apparently lead to heart complications. I'm 35 and seemingly going strong. In my early 20's they wanted to test the adult effects of synthetic HGH on me but I declined. Chances are, some life-threatening side effects will be discovered. Hopefully that won't be the case and HGH can be the anti-aging miracle drug science has been looking for.
I'm glad we have Sylvester Stallone to tell us what's what. He's not biased or anything, and he's easily more informed than, say, the entire medical community.
There is a great deal of controversy among some people in the medical community about steroids. One of the HBO sports show (don't remember if it was Bryan Gumbel's or Bob Costas' show) had a feature on it and there were guys in their 70s saying steroids weren't as dangerous as everyone says/thinks, and taken in carefully they are beneficial.
Now, mind you, I don't recall any doctors supporting those statements, but some of the people they talked to had been taking steroids for upwards of 50 years.
Not that I necessarily buy that, or as Stallone states, that HGH is harmless and will be over the counter in 10 years, but it was something to think about.
I definitely don't think it's harmless, but I don't think it's such big news. I mean, if these guys want to use it, they are taking the risk. I think there should be more education about it, and then let them make their own decisions. I do worry though, about cases like the wrestler Benoit who ended up killing his family as well as himself.
Sylvester has prolly been using HGH before he was doing the ROCKY series.
