After a holiday break, we pushed out another Indy.com update early this morning and it's a big one.
I could just let you guys discover all the new stuff on your own but I figured it'd be better to let everybody know the changes right off the bat.
The biggest new feature is photo galleries. Long-requested, you can now create galleries from the photos you upload to Indy.com. I threw together a quick walkthrough last night and you can find it here.
You can find more user galleries at our main photos page or at the user galleries page. You can also find all the galleries by a specific user (once they have some, there'll be a link on their profile in the photos section) or galleries by tag (I go over that in the walkthrough I mentioned earlier).
In flipping through those galleries, you might stumble upon another mini-feature in this update. The gallery slides at long last include a link back to the user profile of the person who submitted it. If the photo's from a user, you should see a line like, "Image submitted by USER". Click the user name and the user profile will open up in the background. This is especially handy for the Point of View photos on the Arts & Culture page.
We also have a full-text RSS (well, Atom, actually) feed of published staff articles folks can subscribe to. If you need a feedreader, we recommend FeedDemon for the Windows folks and NetNewsWire for the Macheads. Both are free desktop apps, though you could just as easily use something like Google Reader if you prefer a web-based solution.
There's a bunch more stuff in this update (photos in venue and event search results, easier "email a post" functionality, the ability to search stories by author name, etc.), but I think I'll let you guys kind of discover those on your own.
If anybody has any problems, just shoot a note to bugs@indy.com and we'll get back to you as soon as we can. With an update this big, there's sure to be problems and we're ironing things out throughout the day today.
I've been messing with the user photo galleries all day. All bias aside, very cool feature. Got some photos on your profile? Organize them. Don't have photos on your profile? Sorry to hear that.
Just thought I'd interject here to tell you what a Microsoft research guru told an IUPUI Informatics audience yesterday...within a couple (years?) you will be able to take a bunch of group pics...like, say your family Christmas picture. In one, Aunt Grace looks good, but Uncle Bud looks better in this other pic. So, you can X out the bad ones and circle the good ones, and then they will merge all the pics into one group pic where everybody looks great! Is that cool or what?!
