Basic Story: Ever-growing in popularity, Cat Power (Chan Marshall) follows up The Greatest with her second covers record - a tribute to vocalists who've inspired her.

Sample: "They show me to the door/ they say don't come back no more/ 'cause I don't be like they'd like me to/ and I walk out on my own/ a thousand miles from home."

Verdict: With her voice, Chan Marshall could make just about any song her own, and here she does just that. Breezing through the likes of vocalists mostly from the past, Marshall covers artists like Frank Sinatra, Billie Holiday and Bob Dylan while adding in two originals for good measure. Despite backing arrangements from several acclaimed musicians, however, the record feels very linear when played all the way through. But, as always, the strong point is that voice and for many, that's more than enough.
