One of the best kept secrets in Indy, the Melody Inn Poetry Slam, rocked the sparse house last night. Indy's poetry scene is the strongest it's ever been, as poets inspire each other to take their art to new heights. The returning winner from the last slam, nSAYchable, tied with Allen Imagry. Both put on a dazzling show with tight competition all around.

The poet's styles varied greatly, but all had one thing in common; a passion for the spoken word.

The evening began with Imagry playfully taunting nSAYchable, laying down the challenge that ahead. Imagry, a leader and host of multiple open mics throughout the city, recently started a label for spoken word artists, and his young protégé nSAYchable was the first signee. This gave the slam's final round an extra edge, as nSAYchable proved she was now on the same playing field as Imagry, something he probably already knew.

The amazing thing was that every poet was good. And by the end of the night, the competition created new friends. The next step is to perform for a room full of people that aren't poets themselves, and who maybe didn't realize they like spoken word. With talents like these, it won't stay a secret very long…

Thanks for the update, TJ. My work schedule won't allow me to attend Wednesday night events, so I appreciate any information. Do you think you or some other correspondent can report the slam winners every month on indy.com?
