Julian Opie is bringing the boogie back to Downtown - this time to stay.

Last year, 11 public art works by the renowned artist were a hit with workers and visitors to Downtown, depicting moving human figures through thousands of light-emitting diodes. Now one of the "animated sculptures" is returning on a permanent basis. "Ann Dancing," a four-sided figure of a woman dancing, will become a fixture on the Indianapolis Cultural Trail currently under development. It was installed at the intersection of Mass Ave., Alabama and Vermont streets Friday morning in front of Old Point Tavern. Lighting and dedication takes place 11:30 a.m. Tuesday.

The 7.5-mile, $50 million pedestrian/bike trail project will connect neighborhoods, cultural districts and entertainment venues.

A previous version of "Ann" was installed at the corner of Maryland and Illinois streets and was titled "Sara Dancing." This version features new animation purchased by the city.

"It's a different model, a different outfit and a different dance," said Mindy Ross, director of public art for the Arts Council of Indianapolis.

Opie, born in London in 1958, is considered one of the leading figures in computerized art.

Although it was not originally planned for the Opie work to be incorporated into the Cultural Trail, Ross said when a temporary public art exhibit is this successful, the arts council tries to hang onto a piece of it permanently.

The same thing was done with the Tom Otterness exhibit from 2005. Three of those sculptures now sit at the intersection of Maryland and West streets.

Landscaping and irrigation will be added along Mass. Ave. in the spring, bringing this section of the Cultural Trail to completion by June, according to Kevin Osburne of Rundell Ernstberger Associates, the project's principal design firm.
