Top 10 Live is a collaborative effort between the Indy.com staff and Indianapolismusic.net.

1. Emmylou Harris, Patty Griffin, Shawn Colvin, Buddy Miller
8 p.m. Jan. 18, $39.50-$49.50, Clowes Hall, (317) 940-9696.

A quartet of acclaimed singer/songwriters brings the "Three Girls and Their Buddy" tour to Indy to top our list. Emmylou Harris heads up the lineup. Her 30 years in music have garnered a dozen Grammys and earned the respect of fans and fellow artists. Patty Griffin and Shawn Colvin, songwriters who came to prominence in the '90s, are the bill's other two "girls." Singer/songwriter/producer/guitarist Buddy Miller completes the lineup.

2. Todd Rundgren
8:30 p.m. Jan. 20, $30, Music Mill, (317) 841-1850.

Getting his start in music in the '60s, Todd Rundgren has traveled a varied musical path. He's created psychedelic power pop, challenging progressive rock, Beach Boys/Beatles-styled studio pop and electronic music. Most recently, he filled in for Ric Ocasek on a Cars reunion billed as "The New Cars." Reviews of Rundgren's tour report the artist is pulling material from all parts of his career, including several deep cuts from older albums.

3. Everything Now, Cameron McGill, Grampall Jookabox, David Moore
9 p.m. Jan 18, $5, Radio Radio, (317) 955-0995.

My Old Kentucky Blog (an Indy-based indie rock blog) and the Monolith Music Festival (a Denver, Colo.-based event run by former Indy residents) showcase Muncie's Everything Now, with its experimental pop sound. Cameron McGill, Grampall Jookabox and former Chamberlain singer David Moore round out the lineup of eclectic regional talent.

4. Lafcadio CD release party
9 p.m. Jan. 18, $7, Melody Inn, (317) 923-4707.

Bands typically have to pull double duty at CD release shows. Along with performing on stage, they also have to hustle to sell copies of their disc to the crowd. Lafcadio is eliminating half the work. Your $7 admission charge also gets you a voucher for a copy of the group's new disc, "Kibosh." The group brings in label mates Stationary Odyssey along with CJ Boyd and Richard Cranium for a night of challenging music.

5. The Peggy Sues, King Deuce, JJ Pearson
9 p.m. Jan 18, $5, Sam's Saloon, (317) 632-4365.

Indy's newest venue makes its Top 10 debut. Sam's Saloon, in a 120-year-old building in Fountain Square, books everything from country to metal. Friday's bill is an example of the venue's eclectic scheduling: Energetic power popsters the Peggy Sues team up with hard rockers King Deuce and punker JJ Pearson.

6. The Greyboy Allstars
8:30 p.m. Jan 22, $18-$22, Music Mill, (317) 841-1850.

The Greyboy Allstars started as a collaboration between acid jazz turntablist DJ Greyboy and a soul/funk combo headed by saxophonist Karl Denson. The group built their sound with help from James Brown's trombonist and band leader Fred Wesley. The group went on hiatus in the late '90s, but reunited last year for a new album that retains the James Brown-styled funk they were known for. They tour with their full, original lineup.

7. Martin Sexton w/David McMillin
9 p.m. Jan 19, $20-$22, Music Mill, (317) 841-1850.

Martin Sexton's career literally began on the streets of Boston. After migrating to the city from his native Syracuse, N.Y., the artist started out by busking in Harvard Square. Along the way he sold 20,000 copies of his self-recorded debut and moved into Boston's clubs, becoming one of that city's most acclaimed artists. Sexton brings his Stevie Wonder-influenced blue-eyed soul to the Music Mill on Jan. 19 with David McMillin opening.

8. Punk Mania
10 p.m. Jan. 18, $6, Locals Only, (317) 255-4013.

Monthly Friday night punk rock showcase "Punk Mania" got its start at the now-departed Mo's Loading Dock. The event made the move to Locals Only in 2007. Its organizers have locked down the first Friday of each month (except this one) for local and touring punk acts. This week features Indy acts Casket of the Blistered Social, Order of the Black Hand, and Wait til Wednesday.

9. Stravinsky's 'The Rite of Spring'
11 a.m. Jan. 17; 8 p.m. Jan. 18; 5:30 p.m. Jan. 19, $20-$52, Hilbert Circle Theatre, (317)639-4300.

If the warm days of spring can't come soon enough for you, the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra's performance of Stravinsky's "The Rite of Spring" might serve as a substitute. The work, a score for a ballet, actually caused riots at its first performance in 1913. Its controversy has ebbed over time. The piece was even featured in the Disney film "Fantasia." ISO music director Mario Venzago conducts.

10. The Franchize, Dark House Sweet
10 p.m. Jan. 18, $5, The Vogue, (317) 259-7029.

The Vogue's new Live Music Fridays series continues its steady stream of local talent this week. The Franchize pairs a rock combo with hip-hop elements to create a sound that stays true to both styles. Dark House Sweet's acoustic-driven pop, reminiscent of acts ranging from Crash Test Dummies to U2, has made it a popular attraction in pubs and taverns throughout Central Indiana.

While I certainly wouldn't disparage the 10 shows on this list, representing some fine local and touring musical acts, I will say "welcome to the winter doldrums."

Indy's show calendar gets pretty slim from January 2 'til the end of March or thereabouts. Local acts hole up in studios or practice spaces. Touring acts head south or west where weather is favorable.

If you want to hear some tracks from these acts alongside the blatherings of a couple local know-it-alls, visit indianapolismusic.net and listen to Episode 125 of the IMN podcast. It's conveniently located in our media player right there on the home page.
