For those that actually listen to local radio, here's a bit of news to use:
Greetings Friends Of Bluegrass!!!
For 15 years or so The Free Zone on WICR 88.7FM has been a throwback to the early days of FM radio. (Before you were born, remember kids?!?) Described by NUVO Newsweekly as "an outpost of freedom on the FM dial."
Featuring independent and locally-produced music from midnight-3AM every Friday and Saturday night, the format defies description musically. These cats will play ANYTHING.
The program is currently hosted by "Punkshots" Tom & Tim D, and they tend toward avant-garde, outlaw country, and old school punk, but you never can tell what they might get up to. And count on a sprinkling of opinion touching on everything from the political to the philosophical thrown in for good measure.
Frequent in-studio guests and an emphasis on local artists alone makes it worth staying up past one's bedtime. And if you're like me (I work third shift on the 'day job') you about working the nightshift and burnin' that midnight oil in order to keep the home fires burning.
Alright, cut to the chase Fields...
We are proud to announce that, in addition to the usual Fields Of Bluegrass Radio Hour shenanigans during "Friday Night Folk," yours truly, Cary Allen Fields, will now be hosting the Saturday night Free Zone beginning this week at midnight.
And I've got to warn you folks, not having to consider the "bluegrass orthodoxy" in deciding on a setlist, don't be surprised if you tune-in to hear a set that includes Bill Monroe, Black Sabbath, Buck Owens, Aretha Franklin, William Shatner's rendition of "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds," a Chopin Nocturne and Pete Seeger performing "The Happy Turtle Song!"
Proud to now be a part of this fine Indy tradition, I solemnly swear to uphold The Free Zone credo of "Better Living Through Independent Radio."
The Free Zone on WICR 88.7FM. Every Friday and Saturday night at midnight, and rightfully so.
