Terminator TV -- thumbs up or down?

So who caught the premiere of "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles" last night? What'd you think?

My own take: I thought it was pretty good, not great. The storyline was logical in terms of dealing with the first two movies and the time-jumping aspect. Special effects and makeup were pretty sweet on a TV budget.

Of course, you have to get past the fact that the first movie established that only two people went through the time machine, Kyle Reese and the Terminator, before it was smashed. Every new iteration of the Terminator series has to essentially fudge: "Uh, actually, there was a second terminator ... no, make that three ... four terminators ... no, make that 4,359..."

I'm pretty iffy on Summer Glau as the good female terminator. She just doesn't look like a cyborg to me. Since all the male terminators have been muscle-bound supermen, wouldn't the females be all tall and Amazon-y? Like Kristanna Loken in T3?

The producers seem to have said: "Well, this Summer gal did chop-socky in that 'Firefly' show, the geeks love her, so let's have her do chop-socky in our thingee."

All together, I give it 3 stars out of four. I'll keep watching, for now.

By the way, anyone know how many episodes they got in the can before the WGA strike came down? Not sure if I want to commit to a new show that's going to come to a screeching halt after one month...

I downloaded this during the summer when a screener copy was floating around the web. My wife and I liked it...I'm looking forward to seeing what happens next, but I may have to download it and watch it again since it's been about six months since I've seen it.

Update: word around the blogosphere is there are 9 episodes in the can. Now that the Colts are done, it looks like I'll have something to watch on TV at least into March....

I'm tentatively giving it a thumbs-in-the-middle. The characters seem off just a little bit. Hearing a Terminator say "our little friend" isn't quite right, and Sarah and John's relationship is too normal.

In T2, Sarah wasn't nurturing toward John. She was protective. They didn't talk that much, and she had the attitude that she didn't have time to coddle him. That is missing here, as she's more of a normal mom, and the story arc (at least last night) was Sarah and the Summer Glau Terminator almost competing over John's attention/affection. That's an interesting arc, but it has a different feel than the films.

But the overall story is still tense and there's a nice foundation, and the show is still trying to find its way. I think a second season might give the showrunners a chance to tighten things up a bit.
