Philip Seymour Hoffman and Laura Linney in "The Savages."

No, it's not a reality show starring the Macho Man and Miss Elizabeth, but it is one of the better films you're likely to see in theaters any time soon.

Philip Seymour Hoffman and Laura Linney team up as siblings charged with the care of their father, who is slipping deeper into the throes of dementia.

Both are equally brilliant, screwed up creative types; he's a professor, she's a wannabe playwright, both wear their neuroses on their sleeves.

Linney and Hoffman are both spectacular, and it's conceivable Hoffman could be up for both Best Actor and Best Supporting actor (the former for this film, the latter for "Charlie Wilson's War"). He's magnificent here, a slovenly bundle of nerves and repressed lonlieness. He clearly fears intimacy and avoids it whenever possible.

Linney is just the opposite, shacking up with her married landlord whenever she can, despite the fact that she hates herself for doing it.

They clash over their father's care. The clear choice is a nursing home, but Linney fears the stigma.

Also check out Philip Bosco as the elder Savage. He is terrific in an understated performance. He's mostly stoic, but manages to communicate a lifetime of regret in saying very little.

Alternately wickedly funny and heartbreakingly touching, his is another must-see film of 2007, one that should be justly rewarded come awards season (if it ever gets here).
