It took some time, but I just sat through Doctor Zhivago.

In the spirit of the new year, I thought I'd check in to see if anyone had taken me up on my challenge to create a list of movies to see.

I have chopped a few more off of my own list in the past week, most recently "Doctor Zhivago" (which I have to admit was difficult to sit through for all 3+ hours), "The Lady Vanishes," "The Elephant Man," and "Fantasia".

Anyway, here's my link, and feel free to mention which films would be on your list of movies to see, even if you only make a list hypothetically.

Please note I added a link to my original post to this link. Come on, everyone has movies they missed that they want to get around to. Let's see some.

Clockwork Orange. All the Godfather movies.

I'm curious, Joe. How did you come up with your list? What is the criteria? I didn't think I'd have any problem coming up with a list of movies I've always wanted to see...but, I've only come up with 20 movies thus far and don't know where to go from here.

I started off looking at Roger Ebert's list of great movies and went from there. I didn't choose all of his (or the ones that I hadn't seen on his list), but I did ones that I really thought were essential.

But I also wanted to do classically bad movies ("Plan 9 From Outer Space" for instance), and more modern movies that might not be considered classics but might, say, complete the filmography for a certain filmmaker (like "True Romance," which was written by Quentin Tarantino).

AFI also has lists of great movies of varying genre, and I perused imdb.com's "Top Movies" list for some (though since they're fan-based, you have to take some with a grain of salt). I looked at the Oscar winners list on oscars.org.

I also went off of recommendations from friends and family (my dad contributed a few), That's not hard for me, because often someone will be talking to me about movies and mention one I haven't seen. When I note that, they'll say "You HAVEN'T!?" and sometimes they'll add "and YOU review movies?"

I tried to vary genre and year and tried not to get too heavy on one certain decade or filmmaker. Alfred Hitchcock made dozens of movies, but I didn't want to have 40 Hitchcock films on there, as great as he is.

I also wanted to do a few foreign films, so I added things like "Akira," "Run Lola Run," "Breathless," "Seven Samurai."

I don't know that I have that sort of comprehensive kind of thing in mind for anyone else. It's been a huge time comittment and I've done this at the extreme detriment to my wife's patience, and some of the movies have been real chores to watch.

I think maybe doing 50 or 100 if you're really serious about it would keep things fun and enlightening. Feel free to pick and choose some from my list, or vary the structure-stick to one genre, or choose Best picture winners or nominees. You can always do another one, which I'm considering. Or maybe just try to do your 20 in six months or something.

Good list-some really good movies on there, and some I haven't seen!

Wow, Joe, just checked out your list. Impressive. Dawn, yours too. I can't seem to keep up with all the movies I want to see. I do have a recommendation for you though. We just watched The World's Fastest Indian. I saw a recent interview with Anthony Hopkins wherein he named Bill Munro his favorite character of all he has played. Great flick if you haven't already seen it.

"Indian" is a terrific movie. I saw it in theaters last spring when it came out. It must be finding an audience on pay TV because my mom and step-dad just recommended it to me too!
