Ok so far we've been to Ginza, Kabuto, Ichiban(southside), Sakura, Oceanworld, and H2O(unfortunately). And so far all have been OK sushi. My question to everyone is what is the best(value and freshness) sushi in our circle city??

The best by far has to be Sakura. Have been going there for years now and they never dissapoint. The soft-shell crab roll and the mixed florida roll are not to be missed.

I have been to Sakura a few times, and you are absolutely right. The sushi is great if you have never really had sushi before. Still searching for the best REAL sushi in naptown..

Sakura, Sakura, Sakura...They've got fab yellowtail and the freshest ginger...It's the best I've had other than on a trip to Seattle.

IMO Mikado (downtown) is by far the best. It's pricey, but soooo worth it for a special occasion. Their fish is the freshest; they pick it up from the airport! Hisago (Post and Shadeland) comes in as a close second for me, and it's much easier on the wallet. I agree that Kabuto and Ichiban in Greenwood are good as well.

My vote goes to Sakura. And Sakura Mart around the corner for ingredients if you want to try making your own.

There are lots of reviews, photos and info about sushi restaurants in the Japanese / Sushi category on our Dining Guide page. I have by no means tried all the places out, but I do like Sakura and Sushi on the Rocks.

Sakura is definitely the best place I've been to in Indy. Mikado is probably as good, but at twice the price, it's definitely not worth it unless you're taking someone you want to impress with a more formal atmosphere.

I've been to several sushi places, and have yet to find a place better than Sakura here in Indy. The only complaint I would make about Sakura concerns something I'm sure they don't consider a problem: on the weekends the place is just crammed full of people trying to get a table. It is a pretty small restaurant, so the place gets really loud and if you have a table near the door it can be a bit annoying to have those waiting to dine standing around your table. But the food - divine.

why isn't there better sushi in this town? they're all mediocre at best but my Wasabi on 82nd and Sakura are the best of the bunch. the smell of fish when I walked in the door of H20 almost made me vomit. that's not good for anybody.

I must jump on the bandwagon and go with Sakura. If you have not had the Mixed Florida Roll, You haven't lived. It's so good that my good friend from Miami who has fresh susuhi right from the ocean whenever he wants it, prefers Sakura over anything he has found in Miami! If that doesn't sell it for you, I don't know what will. Best of all, that Florida roll is only 5$ You can eat it whenever without breaking the bank!

H20 was only OK when I went, but it was already a couple years ago.

Sakura was pretty good. Definitely worth being in the top.

Mikado, not worth the money.

Naked Tchopsticks, surprisingly good.

Sakura or Wasabi. I think they both are excellent. I have never had a bad experience at H20 either. Sakura's service is mediocre at best and I always feel as if I am herded around the place.

Ginza (w. 38th st) is my favorite... doesn't look like much on the outside, but the fish is always fresh. I also enjoy making my own and visit Sakura Mart frequently.

Any worries about mercury in tuna? The New York Times recently tested sushi from various NYC restaurants; much of the bluefin tuna showed high mercury levels. Would high amounts of mercury keep you from eating sushi? Read the story here: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/01/23/dining/23sushi.html

Sakura is good, but I've had outstanding sushi at other locations. I stopped going to Sakura because their service sucks!! Can't tell you the number of times we'd wait for our sushi for 45-50 minutes and see tables that came in 15 minutes after us get their food first. Plus as someone said, on weekends you can't hear yourself think - overall, not a great dining experience. I've had great sushi at Sansui in Carmel, at Oceanworld and also the California roll at Kona Grill in Clay Terrace is pretty darn tasty. Naked Chopstix is good. It's been a while since H2O though when I went it struck me as over-priced. Ginza is decent, but nothing dazzles. Mikado was good, but not memorable. Frankly, I think my husband makes the BEST sushi in town! :-)

Polina's right about the service at Sakura. And don't even bother with reservations there. They're kind of like the Rent-a-Car place in the Seinfeld episode where Jerry is all, "Anybody can take reservations. But HOLDING the reservation is the most important part."

That aside, I prefer their sushi to every other restaurant I've visited in Indy, with Wasabi on 82nd being a semi-close second. Oceanworld is good too. H2O is overrated and overpriced, but have incredible cookies.
