Zero? Zero karma points? What happened to all my other karma points? Have they gone to the karma bank, or are karma points like 2007? We all know there was a 2007, but it is gone now and we all start 2008 fresh… almost as if there were no 2007. I'll just have to consign myself to the fact that, like 2007, I had a good karma number. But now, like 2008, I've got a whole fresh start concerning my karma number. I haven't decided what my new karma resolutions are going to be… but I'm working on some. Are you?

Karma rolls over each month.

We also keep track of your alltime karma. You can either check your Karmic ledger to find the number or just check the alltime leaderboard to see where you stand.

The monthly leaderboards stay up for a day after the end of the month too. It'll refresh tomorrow.

Correct me if I'm wrong Chris, but a lot of this Karma stuff will start to make more sense next month.

Actually, after my initial surprise at seeing zero Karma points, I figured it was a "no roll-over" situation. Then I realized, in many ways, that is what the new year itself is like. So the subject of my post was more about fresh starts than it was disappearing karma points. However, thank you very much for attempting to help clear things up in such a timely manner.

I read the rules...but, I must've missed the part that said we start ALL over each month. I was climbin' that Karma ladder like a madwoman since I've been off work for Christmas break. I started out at #69, I'd worked myself up to #24, then #12 and I think I might've been up to #8 when I last looked with over 300 points (I was right on the coattails of DigitalEvolution, I was getting ready to bump him!). Imagine my shock and confusion when I looked today to see my lowly 0 points...

Oh, well, I'm kickin' some of the butts I was BEHIND last month...if only for a day...guess I shouldn't complain! :-)

Dawn: you're likely still kicking butt and climbing on the alltime leaderboard. Your points are still there, we just do two leaderboards: alltime and monthly.

Too funny & here I was not even knowing there were such a thing as Karma points..... guess I've not been paying enough attention! Hmmm probably a good thing otherwise I'd likely be trying to bump Dawn & not getting anything done at home! LOL

What is the deal with this karma thing?

What points to you get added or deducted for what? [i.e. +12 for a post, -12 for posting a bad word?)

What is the point system... seems a bit abstract.

Its crazy-scientific. Check out your 'Karmic Ledger' and it'll give you a good idea of how it works. Go to your profile and at the top to the right of your user profile picture you'll see a link for 'karma ledger'. Hit it.

I still don't understand... could you post the algorithm? Seriously... it is vague, any chance indy.com could link or post more?

Click on "My Profile" and then click on the "Karma Ledger" link under your Karma Points. It explains how many points you've been given and for what. You get points for posting new articles, uploading photos, writing reviews, etc. There are also many things you don't get points for.

It might help to read this: http://www.indy.com/karma#karma_faq

Yeah I read that but it does not answer the question. It simply says the "scientists givith and they taketh away". : P

It also say check the online conduct guide, which does not exist. If nobody knows, then nobody knows.

I don't know if the people who designed the site are still involved here. I think it is a neat idea and just wanted to know how it works in a bit more detail then currently offered.

For that matter I don't see the rules either and there are rules... I already got an e-mail on that.

Here's the basic deal:

12 points for a post
6 points when someone (not you) comments on your post (also, each user can only give you 6 points with a comment ... no doubling up)
3 points for filling out a profile field
6 points for uploading an avatar
3 points for getting a new fan
15 points for writing a review
9 points for a photo
30 points for a successful invite to the site

I'm sure I'm missing some, but that's the gist.

If something is flagged off the site or deleted by an admin, you loose the points. Point values and things you get points for (like, it might be worth more in the future to add a photo to an event or venue than just to your profile gallery) can change at any time. We can also manually change things if we find out somebody's gaming the system.

For now, it's just for funsies ...
