Top 10 Live is a collaborative effort between the Indy.com staff and Indianapolismusic.net

1. Rev. Peyton's Big Damn Band w/ Jason Webley & Mandy Marie and the Cool Hand Lukes
9 p.m., Dec. 31, Spin Nightclub, $15, (317) 257-0000.

Rev. Peyton's Big Damn Band has grown from a beloved local act to a nationally known group gaining popularity through hard touring. They already have a busy 2008 planned with a schedule that includes a six-week stint opening for Celtic punk band Flogging Molly. Before setting out on tour, they'll bring their rural blues sound to Spin Nightclub for a New Year's Eve party also featuring Jason Webley and Mandy Marie and the Cool Hand Lukes.

2. Punk Rock Night New Year's Eve with Acid Green, Crypto Kats, The Fuglees, Toxic Reasons
10:30 p.m. Dec. 31, Melody Inn, $10, (317) 923-4707.

Punk Rock Night never skips a chance to throw a good party. It concludes 2007 with a night of bands that could easily headline any other Punk Rock Night event. Toxic Reasons is one of Indy's best-known and longest-running punk acts. The recently reformed Acid Green brings their heavy sound to the affair. Revved-up psychobilly from the Crypto Kats and hilarious power pop from the Fuglees complete the night.

3. Latex Novelties, Atomic Bombay, The Gizmos
9 p.m. Dec. 31, Locals Only, $15, (317) 255-4013.

Indy's old-school punk fans might have a hard time choosing between this show and the Punk Rock Night event. The Gizmos and Latex Novelties were among the first Indiana punk bands. The Gizmos formed in Bloomington; Latex Novelties came from Indy. Bloomington surf rockers Atomic Bombay complete the bill.

4. Here Come the Mummies with DJ Marcus
9 p.m. Dec. 31, The Vogue, $40, (317) 255-2808.

Nashville, Tenn.'s Here Come the Mummies doesn't need an excuse like New Year's Eve to pack the Vogue with fans. Every visit by the mummified funk-rock band is a sure sellout at the Broad Ripple nightclub. The band takes the stage at 11 p.m., with the club's usual dance fare filling the hours leading to the live music. The night is also a celebration of the Vogue's 30 years of presenting music.

5. Bigger Than Elvis & the Mike Farmer Band
9 p.m. Dec. 31, Radio Radio, $5, (317) 955-0995.

If holiday gift-giving has depleted your New Year's Eve budget, this is the show for you. A low $5 cover charge gets you into Radio Radio. The lineup features rockabilly trio Bigger Than Elvis, the unofficial house band of Radio Radio, and rough-hewn straightforward rock from Mike Farmer Band.

6. Big Car's Bohemian New Years
8 p.m. Dec. 31, Big Car Gallery, $10, (317) 450-6630.

Big Car Gallery in Fountain Square delivers the list's only family-friendly and all-ages event. The gallery venue is known for presenting cutting-edge visual art and music. At the gallery's New Year's Eve event, partygoers can take in video art and enter a coloring contest. Music from: Beat Debris, Paper Son, Red Light Driver, Odyssey Favor, and others.

7. Virgin Millionaires & The Why Store with Carl Storie Band and X-Ray Roger Jimmy
8 p.m. Dec. 31, Hyatt Regency, $49, (317) 253-4900.

The Hyatt Regency traditionally hosts one of Indy's biggest New Year's Eve parties. This year, Virgin Millionaires and The Why Store co-headline the night. The Carl Storie Band and X-Ray Roger Jimmy round out the musical offerings.

8. Cynthia Layne
9 p.m. Dec. 31, Jazz Kitchen, $25, (317) 253-4900.

Now in her third year as the Jazz Kitchen's New Year's Eve entertainment, Cynthia Layne is the perfect choice for the club's year-end show. She's become one of the city's best-loved performers, thanks to her blend of jazz, R&B, and funk standards with her own music inspired by those sounds. She's backed by some of Indy's best musicians.

9. Polka Boy with Sam King
6:45 p.m. Dec. 31, Rathskeller, $55, (317) 636-0396.

Big events at the Rathskeller typically mean a visit from Polka Boy. New Year's Eve is no exception as the group known for translating the classic rock catalog into polka headlines the night. Your ticket also gets you hors d'oeuvres, party favors and champagne at midnight.

10. Creepin' Charley & the Boneyard Orchestra with Joint Jumpers
8 p.m. Dec. 31, Zanies Too, $10, (317) 357-6022.

A rumor that Zanies Too was pulling the plug on live music in 2008 recently made the rounds. We were pleased to discover that the news was just a rumor. Zanies welcomes the new year with Creepin' Charley & the Boneyard Orchestra. The Joint Jumpers join them.

Top 10 Live is compiled by a variety of print, radio, and internet journalists and indianapolismusic.net. I believe there is only one person from Indy.com that helps choose which concerts make the list. Personally I think it should have made it, but it would be unfair for us to put events in Top 10 Live or Culture Club by default when we're a sponsor.

By the way, thanks for all your posts informing indy.com users about the New Year's Eve Masquerade Ball and for participating in other conversations.

Thanks, Ben - I truly appreciate the response.

I enjoy Indy.com! Now I just have to figure out how to get my karma points converted over to my user account. :)

All - please check out the Budweiser Select New Year's Eve Masquerade Ball -- we have two incredibly fun, nationally-known musical acts - LUCE (www.luceband.com) and Jonathan Clay (www.jonathanclay.com). They are both phenominal performers.

Luce has previously performed at the Music Mill and The Vogue (opened for Toad & the Wet Sprocket). We're very excited about their return! And this will be Jonathan Clay's first performance in Indiana...you will love him.

I think everybody who visits here on indy.com is very much aware of the Budweiser Select New Year's Eve Masquerade Ball and the fact that the Budweiser Select New year's Eve Masquerade Ball is going to be a great time for all. So it's probably OK if some stories on indy.com don't mention the Budweiser Select New Year's Eve Masquerade Ball or any of the talented acts appearing at the Budweiser Select New Year's Eve Masquerade Ball or the many other fantastic aspects of the Budweiser Select New Year's Eve Masquerade Ball.

Number 7 should be a little higher. Although im not a fan of the virgin millionaires and disagree that they should play last. I think the why store deserves to be a little higher. Chris shaffer is a wonderful singer/guitarest, but i can understand why its towards the end with tickets being 49 dollars and all. Nice picks tho

FWIW...

A couple of Indy.com staffers vote weekly - Matt Gonzales and Dave Lindquist. We used to have three, but Jessica Halverson retired from voting when she moved on from Indy.com. We're thinking of adding some new voters in 2008 - nothing definite yet. But yeah - no default shows on the list due to Indy.com, indianapolismusic.net, or any other sponsorship. We keep our democracy democratic!

Without revealing too much method to our madness, I will say the top two shows definitely got the most votes with the other nine all pretty tight. A couple votes change and #10 is #3 and vice versa. So think of this list as a nice diverse selection for NYE fun. Add in Dave Lindquist's list published today and you have a lot to choose from.

I will say I was a bit surprised at the deficit of live music NYE events this year. Seems like the selection was way down vs. recent years.

Shows that also received votes were: Jon McLaughlin @ Music Mill Robert Bradley @ Bluebird (Bloomington) Indy Jazz Orchestra @ Indiana Roof Gordon Bonham @ Apres Jacks The BUDWEISER SELECT NEW YEARS EVE MASQUERADE BALL Tish Lyndsey @ Pucks Acoustic Flyer @ Mousetrap The Here Now @ Birdys
