So Many Browsers, So Little Memory....What Did I Say??? :-)

I love to surf the Net, but my use of browsers has changed from time to time. When I began to experience the Net back in 1997, despite my Mom's insistance that the Net was nothing more than a pornographic warehouse. My Dad, God rest his soul, told her than in these days, you have to be trained on PCs to be successful. So, she gave up. It was too bad he never experienced the Net. When he was about to lose his battle with colon cancer, I set up his own email account. It was gonna be IUfan98@yahoo.com. It was too bad he never got to experience the joys of the Net. He would have loved it, especially following his beloved Indiana Hoosiers basketball team. He idolized Bobby Knight to the extent that he put IU calendars, etc all over his and Mom's walls in their bedroom. He thought Bobby Knight was a god.

When I got to experience the Net on December 29, 1997, I got Netscape as my main browser. I got it from a book that I paid 50 bucks for at Castleton Square...along with a book that had a CD ROM with Internet Explorer 4 in it too. Netscape was a breeze to run, until I ran across crashes and crashes with my Windows 95 PC. I even got so frustrated that I made the plunge and installed IE 4. I thought IE 4 was so much better...with ActiveX and it was compatible with sites,...some of which I couldnt access with Netscape.

The first website that I actually paid for a subscription:

Slate Magazine..which back then was a Microsoft website. Even got a Slate umbrella for being a paid subscriber. The one good thing about the site was its discussion forums, called The Fray.

The second site that I paid for a subscription to access:

WSJ.com, which will be free soon.

The main browser I regularly use is Opera. Opera is by Opera Software, a company based in Norway. I do also have Netscape, but its now a by product of AOL.

I'm partial to Camino having been a long time Firefox user and wanting something just a bit more in the spirit of my OS. Safari beach balls too often for my uses. I do love that it supports ICC profiles for the web though.

That's the number one feature I'm waiting for more browsers to support, I'll jump for joy once it's incorporated in the main Firefox build and hopefully it will make its way soon thereafter into other Firefox derived products.

Opera is very nice, it's always been a bit ahead of the curve. The interface just left me feeling cold, but that's just sort of personal thing.

Is Lynx still around?

Lynx is still around, but the last time its been updated was on 2/6/06. So, its still available for download. The developers say that they are working on version number 2.8.7. Heres the directory where to download:

http://lynx.isc.org/current/

However, its noted that the binaries are up to Windows NT 4
