Hi! Has anyone been to Sam's Saloon? It's in the Fountain Square area...apparently under new management. I have heard some great reviews about the acoustics (live bands) but haven't made it there yet...
Yep,but it's been years. It's one of the oldest watering holes in Indy. I hope they kept the old gas lights.
They've still got the gas lights, Don! I went there a couple of weeks ago. Mike Farmer is running the place, and it's an awesome spot to go and hang out, see some bands, etc. The seating and bar area is in another section of the building away from the stage, so you can go, hang out, and relax with friends during a show and just enjoy the band as background music, or actually head into the stage area and get your groove on. The place is pretty large, too. I've only been there once but already I'm a fan of Sam's Saloon; the place runs big on character and style, plus it's in Fountain Square--always a bonus in my book. For what's it worth--I hope this helps.
Back about 15 years ago I lived three houses down twords the east from there when we did a show we'ed sign the ceiling in the big back room.
Here are my two cents in a nutshell. I just wrote a detailed review of the place if you'd like to read more.
All in all I think it's a pretty cool place with a lot of potential. And when I say potential, what I mean is that its not "quite there yet," but it's not far off.
Most important (to me as an audio engineer), the sound of the place is really pretty good and that always makes me smile. The look and vibe is unique and quite nice as well! I'd recommend going, especially if a band you like is playing there.
P.S. Frogmajik, I think the old signatures are still there... !
