My wife and I recently introduced our son to The Wizard of Oz (it quickly became the first film in my DVR to get "Keep until I delete" status).
But something I noticed that I never had before: in the scene where the flying monkeys attack the Scarecrow, the Tin Man and the Lion, the Scarecrow is holding a gun (this is just before the "I do, I do, I do believe in spooks" part). What's up with that? Where did he get it? Why doesn't he use it?
Also, while I'm mentioning Oz, anyone else ever do "The Dark Side of the Rainbow"? Very cool, but difficult to do from a TV version with commercials (can't keep the CD in sync).
Joe, It's Pink Floyd.Dark Side of the Moon.Start the Cd when it changes to color. When the house lands.
Actually, you start it when the MGM lion roars for the third time, and it matches up mostly with the black and white portion. I did it several years back, and there are a lot of creepy things: for example the lyrics "balanced on the biggest wave...race towards an early grave" occurs just as Dorothy is balanced on the fence in the hogs' pen and she falls in as the second line is sung, then the music picks up as the guys scramble to retrieve her.
There are several instances where there are eerie "coincidences" like that.
I called it "Dark Side of the Rainbow" as a combination of DSotM and Oz.

And here's a list detailing how the album and the film sync and other coincidences/parallels between the two:

If you've never heard of this, it's really quite fascinating.
So what's the deal with the gun?
I have always called it "The Wizard of Floyd." It freakin' rules. Especially if you invent a drinking game to play along with it.
The Scarecrow pulled the gun out of his bum.
He has the gun because they're going to confront the witch. I guess they got their weapons during a scene that was later cut, at least according to this, from www.slipups.com:
"They picked up the weapons at the Emerald City and headed to the Haunted Forest. When they got there, the witch had "sent a little insect on ahead to take the fight out of them" to make the job easier for the flying monkeys. The "insect" was, as stated above, the Jitterbug. It was supposed to be a song and the jitterbug was supposed to make them dance until they were too tired to fight the monkeys. The tools were supposed to be used in that sequence. The scene was cut after a closed preview to some remote little town. It was decided that it took away from the seriousness of the story and that it made the movie too long and that The Jitterbug wasn't a timeless dance. Hope I've helped in some way."
