When most think about beloved Watcher Rupert Giles, they can sometimes only think about his job, his past, or his English accent. But in my opinion, one of the most important things about him is that he is an amazing father figure to Buffy.
Although protecting Buffy is part of his job, he would risk his life for her in a heart beat. And he was always there when she needed him. The first time he wasn't there, in season six/seven, was beneficial to Buffy, making her see that she could grow up and take care of herself.
In the episode "Anne" (3.01), Joyce tells Rupert that she blames him for Buffy running away. There is no doubt in my mind that the look on his face wasn't anything but sorrow for both Joyce and himself. Deep down, he is blaming himself as well, not because he's her watcher, but because of the bond him and Buffy share, the father-daughter feeling.
In early Season Six, Buffy is expecting Giles to do everything for her. He asks her in one episode "Did you talk to Dawn about that incident on Halloween?" And she answers, "I thought you took care of it." This is further explanation of how it was beneficial for him to leave, in order for Buffy to follow through in all of her un-Slayer responsibilities.
Rupert Giles was a pivotal character in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and I can only hope it remains that way in the new BtVS: Season Eight comic book.
ok.....
This was part of a discussion at helium.com . I posted it there and here.
My favorite "Giles" moment was when he smothered that dude who was Glory's altar-ego. After getting his ass kicked so often, it was nice to see him have a hard-core moment.
I loved the way Giles developed over the years, but I still think Wesley had the more fascinating development arc from S3 of 'Buffy' through all five of 'Angel.'

He did come quite a long way.
