Movies delight me. They entertain me. They amuse me. They make me smile. But rarely do they enlighten me in huge ways.

There are a couple, though, that have really made me re-evaluate the way I think about things. Off the top of my head, "What the Bleep Do You Know?" is the first that comes to mind. "Sicko" wasn't quite as intense, but definitely struck a chord.

And I'm always looking for things like this to challenge the way I see the world around me.

Suggestions?

As a kid, "Mask" taught me a lot about being accepting of other people and looking at the world through their eyes, as did "Boys Don't Cry" more recently.

"12 Angry Men" changed my life as well, both in the way I think (about looking dispassionately at something when everyone else is quick to judge someone or something they've done." "A Few Good Men" is another one that influenced me greatly as far as hashing out a problem and trying to look deeper at things.

The Holy Mountain. The most surreal and tripped out movie I think I've ever seen. I wish more movies were made like this one. I recently acquired a dvd copy.

I love when a movie presents a perspective on a situation that I may not have considered before...some recent films that have rocked my world are MONSTER, and LARS AND THE REAL GIRL (a fantastic story about the power of love)

That's what Boys Don't Cry did for me. It took a situation that literally every other movie I've seen that addressed the topic made a joke and made it one of the most heart-wrenching things I've ever seen. Hilary Swank was beyond incredible, and she became Brandon Teena. And I've never hated anyone in my life more than I hated Peter Sarsgaard by the time that film was over. Course, he's one of my favorites now.

Jim Carrey is hilarious but I don't know if it taught me anything.

"Mask" with Cher and Eric Stolz, not "The Mask" with Jim Carrey.

Erin Brockovich. She made me feel like I could do anything as a woman. I wish I could say anything and the words would flow as well as hers, but I've gotten better. I'm not just a fly on the wall anymore. And that I can do any job, big or small. Who says it's a man's job? ha!

there are a few.

  • electric grandmother - freaked me out as a kid, but taught me a lot about life and the affect that my actions had on others.

  • elizabethtown - we've had those days.... and we need that one person to turn it around for us. just a reminder that even when what you've given up everything for doesn't end up a success, a different road may make you a much better person than you've ever imagined. it reminds you to "make time to dance alone with one hand waving free." -claire

  • the dirty dozen - life throws (or we create) a lot of not so good situations. another situation that could be just as bad may come along, but with an upside - with risk. is the outcome worth the risk, or do you not play and head down the same dead ended path?

I like most any film, unless it's a period piece, gross-out comedy, or outrageous action movie (with certain exceptions). But, I've been most affected by modern relationship dramas rather than social or political films.

A lot of good films explore relationships and don't necessarily give you the happy ending. One of these, Lost in Translation, was about two people in dead relationships who find each other in Tokyo. Look up Roger Ebert's review; he nails it I think.

Boy don't cry is amazing!! Def up there on my movies that changed me list. Another one for me is also a Hilary Swank movie:

Iron Jawed Angels (about women's suffrage, you never really think just how strong the women in this movement really were)

I was also very touched by the Motorcycle Diaries. It makes me want to go out and change the world.
