Jenny Elig

I did extra chores one Saturday and my parents bought Michael Jackson's "Thriller" as a reward.

E.xtended P.lay, baby. I really loved Michael Jackson. I wanted to marry him or maybe be him -- I'm not sure. Wait, maybe I wanted to be Cyndi Lauper and marry Michael Jackson. Anyway, I loved "Thriller," I loved the baby tiger he was holding on the cover and I listened to it ad nauseam. And it's still in my vinyl collection.

My first album was a Christmas gift, Elton John's Greatest Hits Vol. 1, which I still have stashed in a milk crate with all my other LPs. I think I was 12. I also have it on CD; got it as a present too, not that long ago. I still like it, although my 16-year-old has been playing it lately too, so I'll have to liberate it from his CD player.

I'm pretty sure that the first album I bought was Smashing Pumpkins's Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness CD when I was in seventh grade. I have no idea where it is, so I can't say I ever listen to it.

Before that, I listened to my brothers' tapes & CDs (Pink Floyd, Liz Phair, Boys II Men, Pavement, etc.) and my parents' records. Some of the records my parents had that stand out are The Beatles, Velvet Underground and The Chipmunks (yes, those Chipmunks).

I also took in a lot of music growing up watching the Jukebox Network. That channel played mostly rap and r&b videos.

My pops had a Cheech & Chong record that had the huge rolling paper in it. "knock knock knock. hey man, it's me Dave, open up I got the stuff." "Dave's not here" hilarious!

Kudos to Ben's parents for owning VU records, and, like Jenny, I thought the baby tiger in "Thriller's" artwork was pretty cool.

The first album I purchased was Men at Work's "Business as Usual." It had two smash singles ("Down Under" and "Who Can It Be Now"), so I could have done worse. This was a vinyl 33 1/3 long player, of course.

I'm still proud that as a young consumer I exchanged an Alabama album given as a gift for a copy of the Who's "Greatest Hits."

I got a copy of Neil Diamond's "Hot Summer Nights" from my mother when I was just a tyke...I still have it somewhere, tho it has been out on loan for a few months now.

The first album I paid for was either Stevie Nicks' "Bella Donna," which reminds me of roller skating, or "Grease." And, yes, I CAN do the hand jive.

While I had others, I think "Thriller" was the first album I went out to buy--we got it from Zayre on Pendleton Pike if I remember correctly. My mom still has it.

Also, the "Ghostbusters" soundtrack was up there too, though it was unfortunately warped in the hot summer sun.

I also remember buying Culture Club's "Colour By Numbers" at a garage sale.

I think the first cassette tape I bought was the Jacksons "Victory" back in I think '84 or '85. I still have the tape, but not the case.

Mine was the Whitney Houston tape with 'I Wanna Dace with Somebody' on it. I can't remember the name of the full cassette. It makes me think of my aunt Susan, and for some reason I keep picturing Debbie Gibson's Electric Youth perfume bottle, but that was years later...

Mine was "Tears for Fears", the one with "Everybody wants to rule the world" and "Shout", and of course my 11 year old girl personal favorite "Head Over Heals"...I still have it. Cassette tape.

Queen A Night at the Opera or the Tommy soundtrack. I don't remember which was first...I think I was 7. My uncle bought them for me...he was awesome!

Mine also was Queen: A Night at the Opera on vinyl. Saved up my allowance for 2 months! Back then, I thought their sound was the best, most unique music I had ever heard. 30 years later, it still holds true.

Mine was "Elvis Live" ...it was a recording of his TV special.

I'm pretty sure mine would have been Disco Duck on vinyl ... a classic. :P

First "contemporary" music I remember owning was the cassette-single of the Bangles "Eternal Flame"/"In your room."

First Album was Michael Jackson's BAD album...BUT I have brilliant memories of dancing like a madwoman to the Bangles' Different Light (more specifically - Track #3 - Walk Like an Egyptian) on the brown plaid couch in my parents basement.

All the first vinyl I owned usually involved, "At the sound of Tinkerbells wand...Turn the page."

The first cassettes I owned were The Police "Synchronicity" and Def Leppard's "Pyromania".

God it makes me feel old knowing I had a Def Leppard cassette back when the drummer had 2 arms.

sigh.

If I remember correctly, my first CD was Warren G - Regulators. Or perhaps Garth Brooks - No Fences. Either way, it's really sad. (hangs head in shame). My musical taste has come a long way.

my first cassette tape album that I picked out was Yes 90125.

I had had 45's prior to that, and had a few tapes that my parents bought me as gifts, but that my first album selection.

The first piece of music I ever bought with my own hard earned money as a kid has to be The Cars Greatest Hits on cassette. Followed up the next week with Sex Pistols - Nevermind the Bollocks and The Smiths - Queen is Dead also on cassettes.

First record I ever bought was a 45 RPM single of I Saw Her Standing There by the Beatles. It was 89 cents at the GC Murphy store in Broad Ripple, basically where Scholar's Inn and Hotbox Pizza are at Collage and Broad Ripple Av.

The Beatles changed nearly everything in popular music, starting with that song. They'd been around for a few years, incorporating everyone else's music into theirs, but when they really did their own thing and released it in the US it made everybody stop what they were doing and notice. They were probably the most disruptive musical force of the era, James Brown being second to them. He was as disruptive, but the changes he introduced weren't accepted as immediately as the Beatles'.
