We have our "Overrated" thread....how about an underrated one? Which movies have been criminally underwatched and underloved and haven't gotten the attention they so greatly deserve?
Here are three that jump out at me:
Hustle and Flow-One of the most surprising films I've ever seen. I thought it would be a typically generic "pimp" movie (i.e. a DMX-type movie), but it blew me away with Terrence Howard's performance and the sheer emotion the film brought.
Black Snake Moan-Another from Craig Brewer, with Sam Jackson and Christina Ricci. A terrific film that uses a exploitation angle to tell a very sweet story.
Boys Don't Cry-The most heartbreaking film I've ever seen, and made me hate Peter Sarsgaard so much that he's one of my favorite actors today.
Hard Candy-We've talked about this one a lot on indy.com, so I'll stay brief on it. A two-person play with a teenage girl who has a suspected pedophile in a snare. Plays with your loyalties, no easy feat when you consider one person is, you know, a suspected pedophile.
"The Interview" http://imdb.com/title/tt0120714/
Hugo Weaving is great in this movie, there's not much scenery, just great dialog. I can't say that I'd ever heard any talk of this movie before or after seeing it... So I'd definitely say it was overlooked. A great film, IMO..
Great! Your comment about the dialog in "The Interview" reminded me of Glengarry Glen Ross. Dynamite cast--Al Pacino, Kevin Spacey, Alec Baldwin, Jack Lemmon, Alan Arkin, Ed Harris-- and it's emminently quotable. Great salesman movie that feels like a play.
For some reason, whenever I mention it to anyone, they say "what's that?"
King of Kong-a fresh Docu not some vanity Project(I liked Darfur Now,but 11th hour come on!)
American Movie-two slackers try to make their film(Mark and his friend, Mike)
Tristrim Shandy-What it's like really on-set of a film,and realllllllly funny too!
A great many of the films that have played Key Cinemas since 1999.
