About 150 local, state and federal law enforcement officers arrested more than 20 people Tuesday during a sweep of public housing buildings across the city. The officers served more than 60 search warrants on residents suspected of welfare fraud and theft, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Lt. Marshall DePew said.“What we began to see more and more was a direct link between people who were involved in violence and public housing,” DePew said. “This sends a message that we are not going to tolerate this conduct and sends a message to legitimate residents that they can feel safe.”Officers arrested more than 20 people on drug offenses, firearm violations and open warrants, DePew said. Details of the arrests were not available late Tuesday.Five children were taken into protective custody after police found them in squalor at an apartment in Beechwood Gardens near 30th Street and Arlington Avenue on the Eastside, DePew said. Police arrested their mother on preliminary charges of neglect and resisting arrest. Her name was not available Tuesday. The officers simultaneously raided 18 locations at Blackburn Terrace near 30th and Keystone Avenue, DePew said. They also served warrants at Concord Village near Michigan Street and Tibbs Avenue on the Westside; at Hawthorne Place near the 5100 block of 32nd Street on the Eastside; and at addresses in other parts of the city.IMPD and Indiana State Police officers and agents from the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives assisted the Indianapolis Housing Agency in searching the public housing units.
