Two firefighters were slightly injured in an apartment fire tonight in Wayne Township, but two cats were rescued

The fire, at 5929 Coquina Key Drive at the Westlake Apartments, was reported at 8:41 p.m. Firefighters were called by a resident who saw the fire burning around an air conditioning unit, according to Justin Sparks, spokesman for the Wayne Township Fire Department.

While firefighters needed only 10 minutes to control the fire, they needed another half hour to extinguish the flames because the fire had burned behind walls and floors, damaging structural supports. Two apartments were heavily damaged.

Two firefighters were slightly hurt and did not require hospital treatment. Firefighters found and resuscitated two cats that were found in the apartments, Sparks said.

The cause and origin of the fire had not been determined as of Sunday night.
