1st LPGA tourney excites Prange
Amber Prange took her golf game north of the border this summer, and it could lead to a big payday this weekend.
The Noblesville native finished third on the Canadian Tour’s Order of Merit, qualifying her for the LPGA Canadian Women’s Open, which begins today in Priddis, Alberta, just outside Calgary. The $2.75 million purse is the second-largest of any LPGA event.
“I’m so excited,” Prange said. “I hope the weather stays warm enough. I heard it’s chilly in the mornings, but that time of year, anything can happen.”
If Prange makes the cut after the first two rounds today and Friday at Priddis Greens Golf&Country Club, she’ll get to play Saturday and Sunday. The final two rounds will be televised on the Golf Channel.
“(Making the cut is) definitely a goal,” Prange said. “This, for my first LPGA event ever, could be setting my goal pretty high, but I’d like to get in the top 30 or 40. I’m really playing well right now and feeling confident. Anything can happen. It just depends on the week.”
Prange’s father Bob, a teaching pro at The Bridgewater Club and Hawthorns Golf&Country Club, will be her caddy.
“She’s been practicing really well,” Bob Prange said.
Amber Prange’s top finish on the Canadian Tour is a fourth in Guelph, just outside Montreal. She had been playing on the Duramed Futures Tour.
“(The Canadian Tour) was very enjoyable,” Prange said. “Not to take anything away from the Futures Tour, but it was nice to mix it up. The courses we play on the Canadian Tour are awesome. Most of the courses are exclusive. They really take good care of us.”
No matter how she does this weekend, Prange plans to go to the Futures Tour School in November to attempt to qualify to become exempt for that tour. She missed being fully exempt for this year’s tour by about $200.
“Last year, I was going through a lot of swing stuff,” Prange said. “I’ve fully revamped my swing. It’s a lot more structured, and I’m a lot longer than I’ve ever been. I feel nothing but confidence, and I just have to carry that onto the golf course.”
