Personally, I go back to 90s films 'Forrest Gump', 'The Piano' and 'Titanic' as movies that were pop culture phenomenons that have failed to stand the test of time. Give me examples of movies that failed to live up the hype for you.

Uh...er...Godzilla was one for me. I mean really, baby Godzillas?

Agreed, that movie blew chunks.

I think it's been awhile since there was such a huge, hyped movie that didn't deliver as much as Godzilla. I'm sure there are people who will disagree with that, but I don't remember a time since then where THE film of the year was a total bomb like that.

I'm not sure I agree that Forrest Gump didn't stand the test of time. I guess it would depend what is meant by standing the test of time. I could watch Forrest Gump again eventhough I have seen it often. Godzilla I'll have to agree with you guys... It's the big budget sci-fi's an action adventure films that typically get a lotta hype and fall short when released. As for as overrated I would say most Academy Award winners fall in the catagory.

Yes, almost anything that wins an award. Forrest Gump rocks! Shrimp sandwich, shrimp soup, shrimp kabob.......

I'm going to go ahead and put my $0.02 about Forrest Gump. I agree that it was not better that Shawshank Redemption and certainly not better than Pulp Fiction, but it's still a very good movie.

Shawshank is awesome! Pulp Fiction, Resevoir Dogs, Way of the Gun, Snatch, Smokin Aces, Lock Stock and 2 Smokin Barrels! All beyond awesome, or maybe I just like Mexican standoffs.....

Does Transformers fall into this category? I've not seen it, but it sure had a lot of buzz surrounding it.

Godzilla on Nov 17, '07 at 01:56 PM
joe.shearer

I'd say no, because I personally loved Transformers. I know there were some who hated it, but it was one of the biggest hits of the year, and at worst the popular opinion was divided on it.

Godzilla made money too, but was a disappointment critically and commercially.

The Piano- I know my husband would agree. I drug him to that movie kicking and screaming and to this day he has a phobia of anything that is a "period piece" with Oscar buzz. If it is any consolation he has not let me forget that I drug him to that movie. I never let him forget that he drug me to Superman III.

I'll third "The Piano." And this might earn me a little hate, but I just watched "Last Tango in Paris" this morning and found it a little pretentious.

Cold Mountain, How can a movie with Renee, Nicole, and Natalie (who I would watch in ANYTHING, from a short film to a shampoo ad in Japanese, be so disappointing. At least to me. (maybe it's just one of those I just "don't get'. I am not saying it was bad, I was just disappointed.

Most over-rated ? The Departed. Bland, confusing, gimmick ending...

JayR on Nov 18, '07 at 09:18 AM

I'll go ahead and throw "Crash" back in the mix too. Middle-brow, surface-scratching and mediocre.

I LOVED godzilla 2000!

I thought "Crash" (the 2004 movie) was great... the 1996 totally different movie with James Spader and Holly Hunter was kinda disturbing.. but not horrible either..

indyclone on Nov 19, '07 at 11:04 AM
Batman

I'm going to go ahead and add 'Sideways' to this list. It was a nice little movie, but everyone was sooooooo gaga about it that year. Oh yeah, and Titanic sucked. I can't emphasize that enought. sucked. sucked. sucked.

Batman on Nov 24, '07 at 03:56 PM
joe.shearer

Holy smoke..."Sideways" found its way onto my list of favorite movies ever, though I'll give you there are a lot of people who don't dig it the way I do. But to me, there are few scenes in the history of cinema funnier than the hanging M.C. Gainey. You know what I'm talking about.

And sorry, indyclone, "Crash" is still mediocre. :)

Kill Bill (either one). Sorry Q.T. loved Reservoir Dogs, hated Kill Bill(s).

"Pearl Harbor" (2001) 3 hours of my life that I will never get back I agree with you on "Crash" and "Titanic"

You guys are killing me with the question marks about Forrest Gump! It is a classic =)

Yawners for me... My Left Foot, and Unforgiven with Clint Eastwood...it was supposed to rock and I fell asleep in the theater !

For me it's hard for a non-main stream movie to be overrated. Films like The Piano, were never really intended for a wide audience. It's a small budget film that won a few awards so the marketing department got a hold it. Always a receipt for a wasted 8 bucks, IMO.

For me I always look at what a director is tying to do with movie. The Piano was what I thought it would be and what it should have been IMO.

Overrated? Armageddon.

The Grinch. I remember being really jacked to see this movie after viewing the trailer for the first time - then being seriously bored in the theater.

Lord, yes. I saw it when it came out and wished I hadn't spent the money. Two hours of Nicole Kidman looking sad and badly faking a southern accent. Bah! I liked Reneé Zellweger in it, though. Hers was the only interesting character.

ANYTHING with Jim Carrey (except for Eternal Sunshine …), Ahnold (except for The Terminator, only the first) or Tom Hanks (except for Philadelphia). I also liked Catch Me if You Can but don't think anyone's claimed that one's "timeless."

The Shawshank Redemption will always be one of my favorites. (I'm getting verklempt!)

I like Chicago. I don't know that it deserved six Oscars but it's a good one. Sex + music + Richard Gere tap dancing … come on now.

Titanic...the only reason I cried was because I waisted valuable time watching it. :)

I've always thought that the 'Lord Of The Rings' movies were WAY over-rated. Each movie was too long and by the time that they were over with, I had no idea what the hell it was that I numbed my butt by sitting through for that length of time.

Bobby(2006)this was just a star-studded piece of crap with a bunch of 1960 pop culture jokes like when they were talking about Andy Warhol's soup can painting!
