Top 10 Live is a collaborative effort between the Indy.com staff and Indianapolismusic.net.
1. Tonic Ball VI
8 p.m. Nov. 16, $20, Radio Radio and Fountain Square Theatre, www.secondhelpings.org.
Tonic Ball VI arrives this week with the most disparate set of tribute artists the event has gathered to date. More than 30 acts representing a spectrum of musical styles will pay tribute to the Clash at Radio Radio and Madonna (for an all-ages crowd) at the Fountain Theatre. Each act's two-song set means you get to hear a classic tune from a tribute artist along with an original work by the bands. Some of the bands featured include Wolfy, Red Light Driver, Bigger Than Elvis, The Born Again Floozies, Vess Ruhtenberg, Otis Gibbs, Jennie DeVoe, Everthus the Deadbeats, Stereo Deluxe and more. Proceeds benefit Second Helpings.
2. Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings
8 p.m. Nov. 18, $12-$15, The Vogue, (317) 259-7029.
Whether you know it or not, there's a good chance you've heard the music of the Dap Kings. The New York-based soul/R&B revivalists backed Amy Winehouse on much of her latest album, including her 2007 hit, "Rehab." The group made its name with its commitment to re-creating the sound of '60s and '70s soul, funk and R&B. The group brings its own diva, Georgia-born Sharon Jones, to front it for this show. DJ Twin Peaks will open.
3. Patti LaBelle
8 p.m. Nov. 16, $35-$80, Walker Theatre, (317) 236-2099.
The Madame Walker Theatre celebrates its 80th anniversary this week with a gala concert featuring Patti LaBelle. The soul singer has been in the spotlight for more than 40 years. She's not slowed down in recent years, as she keeps up a steady performance schedule and has reportedly re-formed her '70s trio LaBelle for a reunion album.
4. Elizabeth Cook & Otis Gibbs
7 p.m. Nov. 17, $18, Royal Theater, Danville. (317) 745-1499.
This week a pair of artists from the fringes of country, folk and Americana appear at Danville's Royal Theater. Elizabeth Cook brings her spunky alt-country sound that's been compared to such artists as Neko Case and Loretta Lynn. Local favorite Otis Gibbs, who recently relocated to Nashville, Tenn., to further his music career, also performs.
5. The Cult
8:30 p.m. Nov. 16, $32.50, Egyptian Room, (317) 231-0000.
The Cult mixed the hard rock riffs and swagger of Led Zeppelin with the mysticism of The Doors to win success in the '80s and '90s. Known for such hits as "Love Removal Machine" and "Fire Woman," the British group is on its second reunion with singer Ian Astbury and guitarist Billy Duffy. The reunion produced "Born Into This," the group's eighth album.
6. The New Duncan Imperials
9 p.m. Nov. 21, Zanies Too, (317) 357-6022.
Celebrate the night before Thanksgiving with a band that was once one of Indy's favorite visitors. Chicago's New Duncan Imperials were once regulars on the local club scene. Their witty song catalog and their unmatched fashion sense (featuring frayed straw hats and zebra-stripe tuxedos) won them many local fans. With this show, the group makes its first visit here in many years.
7. Ben Lee
9 p.m. Nov. 16, $15, Music Mill, (317) 841-1850.
Australian singer/songwriter Ben Lee may be one of the most frequent collaborators in the music business. His current record, "Ripe," features appearances by Mandy Moore, Nickel Creek's Sara Watkins, The Heartbreakers' Benmont Tench and members of the bands Rooney and Good Charlotte. He's also done work with Evan Dando, Ben Folds and Kylie Minogue in the past. Lee also has won six ARIA Music Awards, the Australian equivalent of the Grammys. Cary Brothers open.
8. Bands of America Grand National Championships
Nov. 15-17, RCA Dome, times and prices vary, www.iccrd.com, (317) 262-3400.
The hard work of more than 80 high school marching bands from throughout the U.S. culminates this weekend with the Bands of America Grand Nationals. The three-day event kicks off Nov. 15 with the champion crowned on Nov. 17. Fifteen Indiana high schools, including several from the Indianapolis area, will take part in the competition. Visit www.musicforall.org for schedule and a list of participants.
9. Stefon Harris
8 p.m. Nov. 17, $26, Loeb Playhouse (West Lafayette), (765) 494-3933.
Stefon Harris has rocketed to the forefront of the jazz world as not only one of the top vibraphonists in music, but also one of the music's top composers. Over the course of six albums, Harris has collected numerous critical nods for his recordings, performance, and compositions. His most recent release, 2004's "African Trantella," is a collection of Duke Ellington's composition rearranged around Harris' vibraphone.
10. Demiricous and Dying Fetus
8 p.m. Nov. 18, $12-$15, Zanies Too, (317) 357-6022.
Indy metal band Demiricous is swiftly winning attention on the national scene. The group released its second album on Metal Blade Records, "Two (Poverty)," in October. Memers spent all of November on a coast-to-coast tour opening for Dying Fetus. This homecoming stop comes before the tour heads south and west before finishing up on Dec. 1. Cephalic Carnage, Skeletonwitch and The Absence round out the tour lineup.
Speaking of Everthus The Deadbeats, they came in to record a My Old Kentucky Blog/SIRIUS Satellite Radio session with me last weekend. They played three new tracks from their album that comes out in February 2008 - Everthus The Deadbeats Present...John Kill & The Microscopic Lullabye - You can download all three new tracks here : http://myoldkyhome.blogspot.com/2007/11/everthus-deadbeats-live-on-mokb-sirius.html
DEMIRICOUS! HAILS!
Tonic Ball! Right On!
I'm so happy I got to write about New Duncan Imperials. This list is honestly one of my favorites I've ever gotten to do. A great mix of unique stuff.
Don't forget Year of Desolation with Demiricous and Dying Fetus!!!!!
X103 has been playing the Cult all week. What a coincidence !
X103 has been playing the Cult all week. What a coincidence !
Well if they don't play any good new bands might as well play good old ones.
I'm sure it was just some sort of major "typo", but I didn't see Jimmy Buffet anywhere on this Top-10 list!
Emerson Hart former lead singer of Tonic is at The Music Mill on Saturday night. He's got a great solo CD out and I think he should be on the list....and I'm always up for a Buffett concert wink
