Basic Story: Phosphorescent, the alias for singer/songwriter Matthew Houck, releases his latest concoction of folk subtleties.
Sample: "To color my eyes into rose/ is to ask of my beaten bones/ to be less of meat and stone/ and more of feather/ but lord they're rolling me away."
Verdict: It's easy to get caught up in the ever-present similarities between Houck and Will Oldham. Both the style of songwriting and vocal delivery make the comparisons accurate, but there is something new here - a sort of lo-fi lushness, mainly in the multi-layered vocal melodies, that is often missing from an Oldham record. Predominately a mellow affair throughout, with emphasis on folky atmospherics, its minimalistic approach to grand crescendos is a thing of beauty, and by track four I've got chills all over.
Nice review! I've really been getting in to the is record lately.
