The musicians coming out of Muncie, Indiana are some of the most creative and daring around these parts. There is a collective vibe, a support system. They all know each other, go to each other's shows and show love in the media. They aren't scared to try new things. Rarely do they play it safe, and Everything, Now! (http://www.everythingnowmusic.com/) leads that pack with an unabashed passion and fearlessness.
Ugly Magic is the second of a pair of concept albums that the band has released this year on the No Record Label (http://www.myspace.com/thisisnorecordlabel) label. You can read about the other, Bible Universe, at this MOKB post (http://myoldkyhome.blogspot.com/2007/07/everything-now-bible-universe.html), or Everything, Now!'s MySpace (http://www.myspace.com/everythingnow).
As many musicians have tried before them, Everything, Now! has taken up the challenging task of changing our thoughts, beliefs and culture. The songs of Ugly Magic attack our way of life on all fronts and most of the time are justified in doing so. In their opening track, "Curse Be The Everything, Now! And All Who Sail With It", they take on the labels and music industry and just about anyone else that springs to mind. Ugly Magic is an odd and challenging album at times, but it's free and creative and a lot of fun. The songs are comprised of layer upon layer of instrumentation and vocals, mixing and blending all genres and sounds.
In their words, "Ring the bell! Light the fire! Poison your enemies with LSD (why not? the government already does it)! Turn off your cell phone and smash your iPod! Slap old people around! It's time to change your mind and possibly the world...Let's wake up the piece (peace?) that disappeared some time ago."
Best tracks : "Curse Be The Everything, Now! And All Who Sail With It" & "Dreamin About Bein Well-Hung Blues"
I also really love "The Death Of Anthony Jackson And How Brandon Saved Our Lives", but those two should give you a good gauge of the excellence...
