I watch literally five TV shows, so this isn't exactly going to be much skin off my proverbial entertainment-consuming nose. Actually, NBA games are the thing I watch most this time of year, and last I heard those still aren't scripted. (Although that one dirty ref might have something to say about that.)
So, on a scale of 1 to 10, how much is the strike crimping your style? I'd rate myself at about a 2.
At the moment things are pretty smooth because there are still new episodes of shows airing. I watch only a few shows myself (30 Rock, The Office). Maybe during the strike I'll be able to catch up on "Tell Me You Love Me" and "Weeds." I have more or less the entire season of each on DVR.
Plus I'll have the scores of movies I have on there also. I'm working on Five Easy Pieces, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid is on there, The Lady Vanishes, Sleeper, Notorious, and some newer ones I missed, like Mysterious Skin.
The only show I watch religiously (and actually enjoy) is LOST, which isn't back until February. If the strike ultimately effects LOST, then I'm angry...from a purely selfish point of view!
The strike isn't really affecting me too much. I watch The Office, House, documentaries and some Comedy Central. For those of you interested in following the writers' strike closely, I recommend the following webpage. It updates with new info and videos about every day: United Hollywood
For those of you who are fans of The Office (pretty much all of you, right? ) I think you'll enjoy the following video of the writers on strike. It's funny and lets you look at things from their perspective: The Office is Closed - YouTube
I saw that video, Ben. I wish I'd thought to post the link!
I also signed the petition supporting the writers a week or so ago. I had an argument with some friends last week about it. They thought the writers shouldn't be striking and that they should be forced to live up to the terms of their contracts.
Mysterious Skin is quite a departure in genre from the previously mentioned films !
When I found out "24" will not premiere in January, I found myself somewhat sad, but I agree with the creators that it is a show that needs to be on in consecutive weeks. Hence, I support the push-back.
I am still not sure where The Office stands - does the show really only have 1 unaired episode left at all for the entire season - or just 1 unaired episode filmed?
Yes. I'm trying to keep myself varied. I'm all over the place-Harold and Maude, Sweet Sweetback's Baadasss Song, Foxy Brown, Double Indemnity, 2001-I'm all over the map.
I'm not sure about The Office. I would think they'd be 5 or 6 weeks ahead of the shooting schedule.
In terms of movies, the strike won't really be noticed until 2009. That's how far ahead the productions run. Look for 2009 to stink big-time.
"Mysterious Skin" was one of my favorite movies of 2005 (or '06, whenever it came out, I forget). It's one of those flicks that stands as a completely original vision, unlike anything I've seen before.
Yeah, I didn't get to see it in the theater, and happened on it the other day, so I hit the record on the DVR. I also got Brian DePalma's "Redacted," which had a preview screening on HDNet last night and hasn't even had its theatrical run yet. I'm interested to see both of them, but I'll probably hold off on them for a week or two.
I never really watch TV until 11 p.m. Then I turn on the Daily Show and switch over to Letterman or watch Colbert at 11:30. So every single thing I watch on TV is gone. Darn those corporations who won't pay the TV writers for putting their work on the web!
