Just saw this:
NEW YORK - Norman Mailer, the macho prince of American letters who for decades reigned as the country's literary conscience and provocateur with such books as "The Naked and the Dead" and "The Executioner's Song" died Saturday, his literary executor said. He was 84.
Seems a very good time to bring out some of Mr. Mailer's words.
I'll start: "Every moment of one's existence one is growing into more or retreating into less. One is always living a little more or dying a little bit."
A very interesting artist----what a life. Novelist, journalist, film director, political candidate, tough guy and great eyebrows to boot. Quite a powerful figure on the American literary landscape. His voice will be missed.
Time for another one from Mr. M: "Each day a few more lies eat into the seed with which we are born, little institutional lies from the print of newspapers, the shock waves of television, and the sentimental cheats of the movie screen. "
I respect his writing prowess, but not his sexist and homophobic viewpoints.
Charlie Rose did a "Best of" interview show last week that was interesting. He seriously claimed that MTV was one good, new thing America had invented recently and also praised Madonna as an artist.

Wouldn't want to freak you out or anything, but I tend to agree on both accounts.
I enjoy MTV when they stick to music videos and Madonna has her merits as well, I found it surprising that Norm would praise them. Speaking of Mailer, did you see this in the Times? http://cavett.blogs.nytimes.com/2007/11/14/in-this-corner-norman-mailer/
I haven't read that ~ thanks. He certainly was an interesting character, that Norman.
