For what seems like forever, Margot and the Nuclear So and So's have been the band everybody's expecting to put Indy on the national map (which is a silly way of thinking about things, but that's another story). With Margot's recent signing to Epic, they still just might be the first big rock act to come out of Indy since ---- well, since The Why Store.
So who's the best candidate to be the NEXT Margot? What under-the-radar Indy band has the necessary ingredients (charismatic frontperson, good songwriting, youth) to make a serious run at mainstream success in the music biz?
I really have NO idea whatsoever what the answer to this question is. Do you?
Everything Now!, Evertus the Deadbeats or Granpaw Jookabox
Gwar!
Gwar!
I don't even know how to respond to that.
Everything Now!, Evertus the Deadbeats or Granpaw Jookabox
Along those lines -- Arrah and the Ferns are pretty rad -- are they still up in Muncie?
Well, the thing about Margot was it seemed like they spent more time putting together a good record before they concentrated on playing out live a lot. I think the majority of Indy-based bands do that in reverse. It also didn't hurt the band is kind of an all-star lineup of people who had been in successful bands around town as well as some guys with recording and producing acumen.
In short, the next Margot may be holed up in a studio somewhere creating a good record.
Brian E. Paulson is Indy's silent next big thing. He has just released his 16th(Quirk) and 17th(A Bumptious Ocassion) CD this year for AEON records.( I hope Indy star will review them). He plays dozens of instruments and has composed over a thousand songs, including "Do the Dog", theme for the Dog at Q95, and the new theme song for WFYI's Art of the matter. He has sold thousands of Cd's through his web site' www.music-for-the-soul. His former group Hugo Smooth in the "80's, was voted best jazz band for two years running. Brian has been under the radar for years but this ultra creative composer, producer, multi-instrumentalist should be given more recognition as Indy's best kept secret. AEON RECORDS.
I'd say if Shadeland got it together and did some heavy touring and promotion they have the talent to get somewhere. As for now I don't think anyone has seen them in a few months, I think they are recording.
There is more talent in Indianapolis, and Bloomington and Muncie than I've seen in a long time. Here are some bands I think have it
Mudkids Pravada We Are Hex Otis Gibbs Magnolia Electric Company Everthus the Deadbeats Beta Male Chevy Downs Gentleman Caller
Of course hard work and determination will get a band farther than talent. That's why my picks would be The Mudkids and Otis Gibbs. They've got it all in place.
All those bands are on Musical Family Tree http://www.musicalfamilytree.com
Everything Now! definately has the talent- if anyone saw their MMS show last year with bigbigcar it was a mind blowing experience. Only thing is... most of the really good bands from around here are from muncie... just like The Why Store.
Perhaps the Mudkids? they're really REALLY good too. MMS was great last year to see a lot of local indy/muncie/bloomington/ftwayne bands. Can't wait for it to come back!
Dang- i forgot about Murder by Death... they're already a pretty big thing though.
And who can forget Haste the Day. Not my thing, but the kids are doing alright.
One of my favorites, the Coke Dares, plays at Local's Only tonight -- but unless 30 second rock songs about going to the mall suddenly become the rage on Top 40 radio, I wouldn't expect them to be gettin' any record deals with Epic or Sony anytime soon. Those guys are also in Magnolia, though, which as of now has probably enjoyed more success than even Margot -- but that's more Molina's thing, who did live in Indy briefly but moved away awhile ago.
Along those lines -- Arrah and the Ferns are pretty rad -- are they still ...
Funny you should ask. Their "last show of 2007" is happening tonight at The Launching Pad w/ This Story, Chad Serhal, and Sgt. Schepper. After that, I think they're going to be writing and recording a new album.
I agree with IMN_Steve that Margot's decision to come out with an album first was a smart move. You can schedule shows every day of the week, but if there's nobody there to like you and spread the word, then it's all for nothing. They built some hype first and then started touring.
I think it's pretty hard to get noticed in Indy. Most of the places where up-and-comers can play are coffee houses where most of the patrons ignore you because they came to get some homework done, or bars where you're completely drowned out by a roomful of disrespectful, drunken idiots. People are so used to the mentality of being spoon-fed new music from commercial radio stations, that they won't give you the time of day if they've never heard of you before.
A couple of local bands I enjoy are Arrah and the Ferns, Kendall Ludwig, Stereo Justice, and Antimacassar. That last one is a group I'm working with right now, but I haven't played out with them yet and I thoroughly enjoyed them prior to being involved in the group...so it's not exactly shameless self-promotion. :)
As a born-and-bred Muncie rat, gotta admit I love to see Muncie continue to pump out some of the best young rock bands in the state year after year. Back in my day it was Crankpin, Neurotic Box, Dead Mister Sunshine (!), F.O.N., Ghotifish, The Common (those dudes are even still together)...and as good as that early '90s grouping was, these new kids seem to be even better --- in spite of the increasingly depressing vibe (talk about a fading rustbelt town) Muncie gives off.
I saw Arrah & the Ferns last month at Spin and they are great. They've been touring and growing. Fun band.
I think Lisa is the next Margot, cuz of her cute shoes.
Wait, what are we talking about?!!?
Salvation is the next big thing. Ask Taffy!
Carl thrashes like mad.
Different style of music totally ... and I'm biased, but I know it when I see it: Mandy Marie and the Cool Hand Lukes.
Oh, AND Salvation. Because I heart Taffy.
Haste The Day - three albums deep on a national label, 250+ days of touring every year, 150,000+ albums sold and no letup in what they are acheiving...
Demiricous - 2 albums now on the world's best metal label. Opened for Slayer, toured the world and they also aren't letting up anytime soon. Probably the most respected metal band from Indiana, these guys will blow up soon.
Rev. Peyton's Big Damn Band - top dog in their genre, hands down. These three bring nothing but praise to the place that raised them! Another band set to really blow up soon...
