Bear with sweet tooth 'brakes' into van

VERNON TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) -- A black bear put his own spin on trick-or-treating when it broke into a van to get Halloween candy. Police believe the bear dislodged the parking brake, causing the manual transmission vehicle to roll about 40 feet down the street before stopping on a shoulder.

That's where a patrolman discovered candy wrappers in and outside the vehicle, along with paw prints, smudge marks, drool and black bear hair.

Police say the patrolman followed a trail into the woods, but the suspect got away.

Fundraiser nets $4,800 for Spay Neuter Clinic

Since opening for business in January, the Low Cost Spay Neuter Clinic has performed nearly 5,000 surgeries preventing thousands more unwanted pets from roaming Hamilton County.

A $50-a-plate fundraiser at Lutz's Steak House in Noblesville raised $4,812 to help ensure the work of the clinic will continue.

"The bottom line is we want to reduce the over population," said Velda Boenitz, board secretary and director for the clinic. "We want someday for Hamilton County to look around and say, 'where did all the unwanted animals go? I guess we don't have any.'"
