Today:
Bootlegs are taken over the big screen...how many times have you gotten out of your car in a grocery store plaza and had someone ask; Do you need any new movies or cds today ma'am? Now, while I try to politely decline, sometimes I want ask them how did you get this before the release or why should I pay you money that Denzel Washington or Mary J. Blige or Keyshia Cole should receive? I don't know, I just had to get that off my chest....how do we get control over the market?
I've had that experience a few times here in Indy, but man, when I was in China, that place was bootleg city. And these guys make some quality bootlegs -- the packaging, art and everything is top notch. They'd have bootleg DVDs weeks before it has even been released on DVD.
I know the Chinese bootleg scene has been well-publicized, but you really have to experience it firsthand to appreciate.
Of course, I never bought any Chinese bootlegs. Wouldn't think of it.
I don't think that has ever happened to me. My aunt, who used to manage an apartment complex, actually gave me a bootleg copy of "Lost in Space" she found in an empty apartment. It was bad quality-camcorder-in-the-theater bad.
who needs to get control of the market? the artist, if lucky, has been paid an advance on the creation of said wares (movies, music, etc.). if you, the consumer, want something available in a free market, then get it. if it happens to be free, take it. if its jethro selling ripped dvd's in a parking lot, give him $5 for beer money and the cost of a cd and internet connection.
the control of the market is in the consumers hand. the Greater Consumer just doesnt know it yet.
