RE: Bugg's Temple
My husband and I ate there last night (Wednesday). The lower level, more casual restaurant is closed in the evening, leaving only the upscale restaurant on the top level open. It is much more expensive and we weren't really prepared to spend as much as we did.
We both ordered from the lower price range on the menu, but our entrees were about $25 each. I liked my sea bass -- the way it was prepared and served with brussels sprouts and quinoa pilaf. My husband also liked his smokey suckling pig, although the name grosses me out and I half expected to see a head on the thing.
A nice touch was that chef Brad Gates came to our table to chat and see how we liked the food. He is committed to using fresh, natural foods grown locally as much as possible.
There is a bar menu which features less heavy food at a smaller cost. I do think there needs to be more salads, soups and meatless entrees. Also, there needs to be fresh, hot, whole grain bread or rolls. We were given a bowl of oily, cold, toasted bread strips that were like large croutons -- not that flavorful on a cold evening.
Will we go back? Yes, because we live in the canal neighborhood and we've been waiting for this restaurant to open a long time. The reuse of a former church has its idiosyncrasies, such having to climb two flights of stairs to reach the dining area. But, I can get into that as long as the food is great and the drinks are wet, and I don't spend too much money for the pleasure.
