Has anyone else been to the new restaurant in Bugg's Temple by the canal?

I went with a group of 10 last friday. We were pretty dissapointed with the service and the quality of the food for the high prices they charge. They also don't offer any vegetarian fare on the menu, my friend got a small plate of seasoned vegetables they threw together for him. The restaurant is beautiful and has a great view of the canal and the drinks and desserts we got were great. Also, both of the managers on that night came to check on us and chat. They knocked a couple of things off our bill and gave us a dessert on the house. I think when they get all of their newly-opened things worked out, it will be a great place to eat.

I think next time I go, I'll probably just get drinks and dessert.

Dj'd a wedding there the second day it was open. Nice place. The view from the 2nd floor balcony is pretty neat, with the canal and downtown skyline as a backdrop.

My husband and I ate there last night (Wednesday). The lower level, more casual restaurant is closed in the evening, leaving only the upscale restaurant on the top level open. It is much more expensive and we weren't really prepared to spend as much as we did.

We both ordered from the lower price range on the menu, but our entrees were about $25 each. I liked my sea bass -- the way it was prepared and served with brussels sprouts and quinoa pilaf. My husband also liked his smokey suckling pig, although the name grosses me out and I half expected to see a head on the thing.

A nice touch was that chef Brad Gates came to our table to chat and see how we liked the food. He is committed to using fresh, natural foods grown locally as much as possible.

There is a bar menu which features less heavy food at a smaller cost. I do think there needs to be more salads, soups and meatless entrees. Also, there needs to be fresh, hot, whole grain bread or rolls. We were given a bowl of oily, cold, toasted bread strips that were like large croutons -- not that flavorful on a cold evening.

Will we go back? Yes, because we live in the canal neighborhood and we've been waiting for this restaurant to open a long time. The reuse of a former church has its idiosyncrasies, such having to climb two flights of stairs to reach the dining area. But, I can get into that as long as the food is great and the drinks are wet, and I don't spend too much money for the pleasure.
